Hi guys

Im thinking about buying a 928 4.7 Auto (1986) which has an fault as per below, please could anyone advise what might be the issue? Apparantly it doesnt overheat.

Point to note

The car has a minor (unsolved problem), the car will start and run fine it idles well, but occasionally (1 in about 15 starts) It will not start. The engine turns but will not fire ‘this will happen if you have been driving for a while’ .If you leave it for about 1 hour and try again she will start up right away. I do not know what this is and could just be a minor problem which I leave to the new owner to sort out.

Thanks for your advice.

Cheers
Greg

My thought would be either some form of fuel regulator issue or more likely a temperature problem in the ignition circuit.
It will need methodical fault finding e.g. when it no starts does it have spark and/or fuel.

Hi :)

I also own an 86 S2 ...that could be one of several problems and none of which are cheap to either diagnose or fix....

Soooo if I was buying it, I would DEFINITELY get the seller to fix it BEFORE you buy it....

All the best Brett :)

Thanks for your advice.

Cheers
Greg

Hi Greg,

The description is rather confused/confusing so hard to advise! Helpful if you can clarify with seller:

- whether there is ever a problem with cold starts (possibly not but description ambiguous)
- if problem is only with hot starts
- how long engine is off before restart is a problem

Frankly it's a buyer's market for 928s, especially slightly older ones like the S2 described. You can probably choose from a number of cars with no such problem. But note that any 928 can be costly at least initially in catching up with deferred maintenance (the seller may be moving the car on because they know a major job is due), regardless of whether it has known faults. Better cars likely to be owned by existing members of TIPEC, and/or PCGB and/or 928 UK. Revealing information is how much the current owner has been prepared to spend recently (say past two years) on the car.

The decline in 928 values is slightly mysterious though - they are wonderful cars.
