Just picked up my second 928, previously had an S2 now an S4 1990, I purchased the car knowing it needed a rear oil leak sorting in diff area, it also seems to run hot, sitting on or just above 90c which I would like investigating
Problem is finding someone to work on it that is not weeks and weeks away, I use zuffenhous in solihull for my 944 but they are not keen to work on the 928 as it’s not a car they are completely knowledgeable about which is honest. I have tried the 2 928 specialists I have been recommended one in Stroud is booked up until November and one in bury is also busy
I am in Birmingham and really keen to address the issues and use the car, any ideas

Try EMC in Birmingham, not sure they are 928, but they build the best 968 race cars, give them a call and have a word with Kevin

to be honest, it's worth travelling that bit of distance.

Stroud is just over an hour away for you, it used to take may well over two hours to get there when I had mine.

Jason the problem is Paul Anderson victim of his own success, and booked up for months.

To original poster I wouldn’t worry about the temp gauge as long as it’s not rising once car fully warm. Mine sits on second white line and it’s simply the gauge calibration - I know the cooling system is all a-ok including new rad.

Well I was hoping that I was worried for nothing but the car used 1.5 litres of coolant in 2 days, no sign of a leak on the floor which is odd, most frustrating thing is I can’t find anywhere willing to even look at it !

I pointed out some areas to check on your FB group thread — even if you can't do these yourself you can pass on suggestions to your mechanic (when you find one with time/knowledge to work on your car!).

But it sounds as if you're only losing coolant under pressure, so you can look for things with no tools or disassembly needed..

First clean up engine bay as much as you can, including hoses, so that any leaks are more obvious. Start car and as it's getting up to temp examine with torch and a long handled inspection mirror. This helps chance of finding leak, but not as good as using a cold pressure kit I also mentioned before. When using such a kit pressurise first to max cap pressure — don't exceed this. Of course if cap is problem you won't reach pressure anyway!

Can you see any coolant in the 'V' of the engine, or in block wells under front coolant bridge?

What colour is header tank? If tan or brown you should replace it — you may have hairline crack at base of tank.

I appreciate your continued input, I work away in London through the week hence the desire to
Find someone who can do this for me, your advice though gives me a base to look at a few things this Thursday when I get home, the header tank is in good shape as far as i remember

Check out the small hose on the Heater Control Valve, they can leak.

Hi :)

Assuming no visible leak of coolant underneath,,, there is only really one place that 1 1/2 ltrs of coolant went...out of the exhaust pipes.. :(

I would get a head gasket test done... any local garage will have a Snap-On block testing kit... takes around 15 minutes.... I have one and would do it for free but its a long way to Bournemouth...

All the best Brett :)

That occurred to me too Brett, but was too worrying for me to suggest till other avenues exhausted!

Checked oil on buying the car and was clean, have not looked since, car runs really well

One thing springs to mind, when I was on the journey home and the coolant light cane on I pulled over at services and went in and got some water. When I came out I was fearful of removing the cap too soon and getting showered with coolant but it can off with almost no noise other than a small pop, perhaps the cap is at fault, will order one today as a start and inspect when I get home from London tomorrow

I can even bring myself to consider head gaskets! I am guessing thousands if it is !

I don’t think that tells you much, since if coolant light came on the header tank would be very low or empty.

If you get hold of pressure tester, it will also contain adapters to test the cap. But it is a cheap and easy approach to try new cap first. What does deal look like in old cap? Any cracks?

Little update as you have been so helpful

Checked oil and all clear, no change from the new look when purchased, I fitted a new expansion bottle cap as the original one looked tired, started the car and waited to see it warm up. Checking underneath I spotted a constant drip, something I was not seeing before the old cap was replaced, it is coolant and appears the be from the back end of engine but difficult to tell as it has the full undertray fitted

What was also interesting this week - in my concern I reached out to Solihull Porsche maindealer, the service (lack of it) and complete lack of response post an email telling me I was to be contacted by service division is staggering for a business working with such a marque ! 3 days and no contact even after chasing them

That's disappointing about Solihull OPC. I use them a fair bit for parts and they always call when promised. Must be service dept that's lacking!

Interesting on the new leak. It's often case that when a failed cap is replaced, it will reveal leak(s) elsewhere as the system is now being pressurised. Realise it must be frustrating for you as I'm sure you wanted to be able too confirm whether or not the cap was main cause of coolant loss.

Leak from rear of engine is most likely the short hose between block and heater valve kenthepipe mentioned earlier. Also check whether any leak from bolts (2 per side) at rear of each head. Left side is a blanking plate, right side is that heater valve hose connection. They are accessible with air filter box removed (take off cover, air filter, then the 10mm nuts on base, disconnect hose right side).
