Post subject:  Unknown electrical connector in instrument pod area

While dealing with a stuck stepper motor on the odometer drive, I noticed an extra connector on the LHS of the pod, it has 8 positions and looks like some of the other round switch connectors. The wires are black with blue tracer, brown and brown with white tracer. The body is wrapped in what looks like OEM quality fabric tape.
Has any one any idea what it was for? I tried looking in the wiring diagrams and it's none to clear. What would help is a loom diagram, but there don't seem to be any in the workshop manual.
The car is a late 1984 S2

It’s for either intensive wash button or odometer reset on USA cars (function depends on model year). Those cars didn’t have rear fogs which is the bottom left position on your pod. US cars had the intensive wash/odo reset button on pod in place of rear fogs, but your car has button under the pod.

Differences in lighting arrangements are some of the most obvious changes between US and RoW cars. Another example is that the US cars have no level adjust for the headlights (different headlights too!), whether hydraulic or electric. At the time level adjustment was not allowed under federal regulations, so the US cars just have a rigid plastic support instead of moveable one in our versions.
