What grade oil is the general consensus on here for the 928, I own an 80 928S and have used 10W40 then someone suggested I stick to what Porsche recommend for that model which is 20W50, which weight oil do you use ?
Eurocarparts have a good deal on this Easter and along with a genuine brand filter it work's out very reasonable for two 5 ltr containers.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as choosing a grade of oil. The other important factor appears to be ZDDP levels in the oil and unfortunately ZDDP is being removed from engine oils. The options now seem to be classic or racing oils and many of these don't appear to contain sufficient levels.

This looks like it might be suitable with 1300ppm ZDDP and pretty cheap too.

Looking at Eurocarparts selection of oil I don't see anything there that I would put in my car (1990 S4) or your early 928.

I'm using Valvoline VR1 20W50 which I understand has the required ZDDP levels

That is what I used in the 944 similar technology and era.

I'm actually using Millers CFS 10w50 which I believe is 1400ppm ZDDP. I wanted extra winter protection from the 10W. I'm not sure 20W is the best choice if you drive your car in the winter. Also Porsche recommend a number of viscosities in the hand book not just 20W50. I'm pretty sure late 928s were factory filled with 5W40.

That's it very high spec mineral oil. Was always fantastic in the 944 & I ran it in the TR7 V8 as well.
