Could I tempted you with a chiffon white '82 automatic?

High mileage but pristine bodywork with no side mouldings and no sunroof.

It's done double the mileage of the red one but will be less than half the price!

Drop me a pm if you'd like to have a chat about it :)

Just my opinion, but I think it is way overpriced.

Firstly, if that is the original spec I would seriously question the mindset of the owner who paid for a leather dash and then opted for cloth seats with that shocking tartan - the pascha cloth on the early cars is a classic design, but a tartan that seems (from the photos at least) to clash with the exterior paint would make it seem less desirable to me and should make the sale price lower. Of course you may love that tartan, but I'd still suggest you pretend you don't and use it as negotiating point.

Secondly, although it's always difficult to judge condition from photographs, I would say that compared to the shiny paintwork (respray? if so, how well was it done when you get up close?) the pictures of the interior and engine bay are quite disappointing. Although there are no close ups, it looks like the driver's seat bolster is quite worn and in the engine bay the tape around the air inlet tubes, missing underbonnet insulation and the weird relay hanging loose next to the jump post (which is also missing its cover) etc. make it look like less cared-for than the initial appearance might suggest. Also, it may have a "full and detailed" history, but that doesn't mean that it's up to date on its preventative maintenance - you'd have to check when the cambelt and waterpump were last done, if the fuel lines have ever been replaced etc.

So, if it had half the mileage, the servicing was fully up to date and the interior and engine bay were pristine, it might be worth the £16k they're asking, but otherwise I would suggest you look at some other cars for comparison and then go over this one with a particularly critical eye before deciding how much you'd be willing to pay for it.

Agreed.... one to avoid....there is too much NOT said in that advert....and drastically overpriced....IMHO...around 5k max....

All the best Brett :)

Its always good to ask the question, photos only tell part of the story. Plenty of things for you to look at and ask questions about. It's a nice part of the world to go looking at cars.

It's a funny market at the moment, values are all over the place. Most people will not want to hear it but prices for good/average cars are falling back quite sharply. Original low mileage cars are still being snapped up for silly money.

I have known Andrew for years, he won't sell a lemon. As for the price, only you can decide if it's worth it, I am sure there will be plenty of wiggle room :)

Top of the market currently looks like this

http://www.thesupercarrooms.co.uk/car-d ... -sale-j278

One positive aspect is owners can now justify restoring cars to original mint factory spec, which are very sought after.

In the meantime driving any average condition 928 is great fun :)

Yes, but that's for a low mileage GTS, the OP is looking for an early(ish) car, so a quick look around comes up with this:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/928/porsche-928-s2-auto-1986/5492867?v=b

OK, so it's a much higher mileage but not unusual for the age of the car, has a much nicer colour scheme (IMHO), and is an 86 S2 so should have the S4 running gear. Plus the advertised price is £6k less than the car the OP was interested in which would provide a healthy budget to fix any initial niggles; I still think the price is a bit strong but if the OP is considering splashing out £16k on the first car they should also have a look at this one for comparison.

Or if that's not early enough and the OP fancies a bit of risk how about this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-928S-1982-4-7-litre-1-821-made-only-Very-Rare-PX-taken-/121938618578

It's been on ebay for some time, which suggests it's too expensive at the asking price, and is now SORN with issues. However I like the colour scheme (pasha interior, that nice light gold metallic that early cars had and also looks like it might have the gold-tint wheels) so it might be worth trying to drive a hard bargain, buy it for ca. £4k and get it transported to Paul Anderson to fix up - the £12k saving over the OP's original car would pay for a lot of corrective work (you could almost get an engine rebuild and a full respray for that, assuming the car was hiding a lot of problems not obvious from the advert).

I still think that's only true for cars that are in very good condition to start with, for most average cars the cost of restoration to mint would never be recouped if you then sold them so it would be something you'd do for love rather than profit.

No argument there, drove my S2 to work today and even though I've owned her for more than 10 years it still feels special on the occasions I do take her out.

Yes it depends what you start with and I've just been through this whole process with an S4.
Interior was excellent. Paint was average. "Invisible" mechanicals and suspension below average.
£6.2K with Paul A to sort ALL mechanicals.
£7.3K on bare metal painting at Daytona.
I've just had an unsolicited offer at £2.1 K over break even.
BUT - it's now so nice I don't want to sell anytime soon :)
