My battery earth strap has seen better days. A few nicks, lots of corrosion and overall effecting the starting ability of the engine. The local motor factors didn't have a similar, so I went to an Agri spares and got a braided aluminum one. After fitting, car turned over.

I wrapped the new earth strap in X-treme silicone tape to prevent future corrosion.

It's a 1986 S2. Plenty of bits to sort out over the coming months!

I'm going to try giving the copper earth strap an electrolytic clean at the weekend and see how it turns out.

I checked mine ('84) and its like new. So I'm wondering if moisture in the boot area could cause corrosion to the strap? Maybe check the boot seal, as these are known to cause leaks if not in perfect condition.

The boot seal is definitely leaking (and the sunroof), the rubber receiver is perished and there is moisture in the boot area. On the to do list.

The previous owner had misplaced the airfilter box straps before storing it - so no straps. Looking online, prices for one rubber strap are eye watering. I bought 4 x rubber tree tie backs @ €4 in total. A little trimming so the notched section fits, inclusion of a hole and then trim to size.

That's a near job with the airbox straps!

New ones are a daft price, but complete used airboxed with straps come up fairly often on eBay, so that's another possibility.

Nice work with the ground strap too. A corroded ground strap can be cause if many puzzling electrical and running issues, so you will have eliminated that as a cause as you troubleshoot your car.

As has been noted the 928 earth strap causes all sorts of gremlins, the one I had was a random shutdown stop and then the car would almost immediately resume normal service. Removed the outer black sheath from the lead and it was the same as the above pics.
This is the lead I bought, (think it was last summer when I initially had the shutdown symptoms ) I also wrapped it in black heat shrink, finished article is as perfect as new original.

Good job! Electrics and earthing points seem to be a common theme in the 928.

..... they certainly are Eoin, probably the biggest bain of all 928,s, there are some brilliant write-ups of all the fuses, relays, and general electrics that cause so many issues on "Rennlist".
If you have,nt already I replaced every single fuse on the fuse board and cleaned their contact points with a dremel, and also the relay pins, although these are quite fragile to remove ? then check the "14 pin" connector on the inner left front wing ( viewed from front of car) this should have a moulded plastic cover on it for protection. Also all the earths that abound on these cars, it,s amazing what doing all this achieves to the general well being of things.

It,s taken me 20+ years now to get mine as good as is possible, if there ever is on a 928

Thanks again for that info. I did a good bit of research before purchasing, but including the Rennlist forum. Lots of good tips there on common issue and associated fixes. The fuse board and co will get a clean one of these day
