Hello 928 Owners,
Having sold my superb 944 a year ago (and massively regretted it afterwards) I was unable to find another 944 I liked as much.
So I looked at a 928 and preferred it, and took the plunge. Usual long list of jobs to be sorted but I love the car!!

Its a 1989 S4 Auto in Black with Linen interior, stainless exhaust and Cup 2 Alloys. The alloys are in great condition but unfortunately have been painted black. I know this 'stealth' look is cool nowadays but I hate them so much I can barely look at them at present. Repaint on those scheduled for this winter.....
This is a (rubbish) photo of the car taken whilst driving it home last month - it went like a dream!

Looking forward to meeting some fellow 928 owners at Merry Miller tomorrow.

Welcome to TIPEC - great choice of car (but then I am a little biased) have to agree I don't like the black wheels but that can easily be put right.
A great wealth of very experienced enthusiasts of all models of Porsche will be only too pleased to help with any question you have.
Enjoy your 928.

Thanks Gents.

Brett, I'd prefer Orange alloys only slightly better than black ones  - but thanks for the offer. A polished alloy or chrome type finish is what I want.

Thanks Andrew, I'm not so new to TIPEC, it's the 928 which is the recent addition - I've previously been on the 944 forum.

Hi Stu

Nice to meet you, your son and your new 928 at the Merry Miller yesterday.

Unlike the later GTS Cup wheels (and the rare D90s), I see original slot wheels come up for sale frequently at reasonable prices and often excellent condition, so I'm sure you'll track down a suitable set soon.

In the meantime hope me and other owners can help with advice as you work through list of jobs. But if she's driving well that's the main thing.

Cheers

Adrian

Thanks Adrian, good to meet everybody Saturday.
The wheels are in superb condition and I love the design, just not in matt black.
As they don't need refurbishing as such, just a colour overhaul, I am planning to re-paint them myself later in the Winter.
Looking into paint finishes at present and will put some pictures up when this is done (probably January time).
How I want them will possibly be as much to the distaste of some owners as the black is to me !
Will probably get them professionally stripped and polished in a couple of years depending on how good a job I do and how it lasts...

Hi,
I hope to join the Porsche fraternity in the near future. I am looking at the 944 cab. or 928.
As you have had both you must be the best person to ask for advice.
1) Living with the cars.
2) The driving experience.
3) Running costs.
4) Rust problems.
5) Difficulty of finding a good one.
6) What to look out for.
7) What do you think of the red 928 on the South West Vehicle Auctions on 29th January?
Thanks, Nick.

A properly maintained 928 is strong as an Ox. Make sure you buy one with up to date service history. Most niggles can be traced to worn out Bosch relays, so either replace them all with new or carry some spares, they are cheap. Mechanicals are granite.
A useful link here from the good people at Rennslist for the Owners Manuals:

Do you mean this one? If so, then my personal opinion is that it's a bit nasty in that the respray has painted over the front spoiler and that it's an early car with a later (post '86) spoiler on the rear and the wheels are probably the wrong offset. However, if that sort of thing doesn't bother you and the respray has been done well and if the price is right it may be worth a bid. You'd have to go and look at it, rather than rely on photos, to make that decision.

It also looks like a 3 speed auto (although it's hard to tell from the small photo) which means it was manufactured no later than '83 and will have manual fuel injection instead of electronic - the earlier cars have their fans but you may want to hold out for a later car. If you do decide to bid then don't pay too much as these pre-S4 models are far less desirable (apart from the very earliest ones).

Just my opinion, of course.

Thanks Beau , will be back to you about relays if I get one!
That was a useful link to the Owners Manual, thanks.

Thanks bmjb, yes that is the car in the auction. They were useful observations you gave.
Interestingly dvlc give that car as being manufactured in 1982 but first registered in 1989.
I wonder if they had a stock pile of 928s in those days.
It has done a low mileage.

The 928 was never mass-produced for stock, nearly all of them were built to order (apart from dealer demonstrators, presumably) so it's highly unlikely that the car sat around unused between '82 and '89. Maybe it was imported and first registered in the UK in '89 or maybe the DVLA records are incorrect or incomplete, but I think most people would want to know why there is a gap in its history for the early years.

Near the end of the model's life, it was common for an S4 or GTS to hang around for a year or 18 months before finding a buyer, but never 7 years! There is a "story" there for sure
