Hi. I'm in the middle of trying to do the cambelt. I have the flywheel locked at 45 deg. I can't get the crankshaft bolt off. I've been to Halfords and bought the biggest breaker bar they had and still no luck. Have I missed some important step? Any tips?

time to find a 4 foot bit of scaffold pole.

I think you are right. However these seem impossible to find when you need a bit.

You are doing everything correctly.
The only way I could do this was to get a 3/4" socket set with a 1m socket bar then add 4ft of scaffold pole and swing on it!

Be careful nothing slips with all that force on it to damage you or the car. But this seems the only way.

Got it! Took the leg off my weights bench and used that as I couldn't find scaffolding. That's the most action the weights bench has seen for a while. Still took a lot of force and the noise was horrible when it finally gave in.

Gets the heart pounding

Some people jam a breaker bar against garage floor and flick the starter, though purists tend to advise against this!

A less spectacular trick is to put jack pad under end of bar at suitable position, and gently jack it up.

But long piece of scaffolding will always work - was it Archimedes who said "give me a lever long enough, and I will move the world"
