Hi,

the cam belt on my 928 looks a little worn, so I'm going to replace it.

Going to do the water pump & various seals while I'm at it, as well as the tensioner rebuild of course.

Where's the best (cheapest without skimping on quality) place to get the parts from?

Also, I read somewhere that the newer version of the water pump uses a rubber impeller instead of a metal one, 'cos the metal one if it comes off eats into the engine body? Can't find where I read that so wanted to check I had it right.
Kev.

You could try Bert Gear at Berlyn Services http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk, he used to be a TIPEC supporter (don't know if he still is) and he does know Porsches. Otherwise you're probably best off trying ECP (Euro Car Parts) or GSF (German Swedish and French) which might be marginally cheaper but don't have the knowledge.

If you're buying a whole load of expensive stuff, it's also worth considering getting it from one of the 928 specialist websites in the USA since the savings from the weak dollar and cheaper prices can offset the expense of getting it shipped internationally and the duty & VAT that you'll be charged on top.

No idea, sorry, but if it is a plastic impeller and it breaks up then the bits might get washed into the rest of the cooling system which is just as bad (so you're better off just changing your water pump regularly to be safe).

Hi Kev :)

I do not know your level of mechanical skill....but...if you have never done a cambelt before, take my word a 928 is NOT the one to learn on....

Get it wrong and you are looking at a wrecked engine

Someone like Paul Anderson will charge around £400 to £ 500 to do the belt, with NEW water pump and tensioner etc...

If you are going to do it yourself (not advisable unless a qualified mechanic) then change the belt AND the pump AND the tensioner....

All the best Brett :)

I've done the timing belt on my 2L v6 Mitsi, (which has twin overhead cams) so won't be my first. :) Yup, will be changing belt, water pump, tensioner, and anything else that's more easily accessible with the pump/belt off, the various seals for example.

Actually worth mentioning, I got a set of CDs from Jim Morehouse (saw it mentioned on 928oc.org), one of which has a video of a guy doing a timing belt, and replacing the bushes on the tensioner. To be honest its not great but interesting to look at, and gives you an idea of what needs to be done.

The cheapest place for a water pump is to find the oe manufacturer for porsche and look for their dealer in the uk who is LASO PKW http://www.laso.de or info@laso.de 0049 276193760
1978-1986 pt no 75200103 1986- pt no 75200104 gasket pt no 75208000 these work out 75% cheaper than eurocarparts or german and swedish with no compromise in quality.
hope you get sorted ok :)

Hi TPSPaul,

thanks for the info!

I see that Eurocarparts do the Laso water pump, £168.55. Haven't found a specific Laso dealer?

They also do a Circoli water pump which is listed at £80.06. I can only presume there's a difference in quality there? For peace of mind alone I'm inclined to go for the Laso but haven't had either in my hand to make an informed comparison.
