About 5 years ago, a chap called into the workshop saying he had bought a 928 on ebay and it needed "a bit of work" and he wanted us to get it up to scratch for him.

The car turned up, it was a 1970's 928, pre-S, 4.5, with a seized engine, rough bodywork, seized brakes, all in all... A real heap..

We tried to get him to put it straight back on ebay, but he was insistant on getting it fixed..

The engine came out, and went to Paul Anderson.. Who rebuilt it.. and that engine was installed..

The brakes (calipers, flexi's, disks, pads), steering, radiator, hoses, transmission, tyres, electrics, and just about everything else was replaced on the car... So mechanically excellent... 4 or 5 years ago..

But the guy never came to collect his car.. Some of the work paid for, some of it not.. But it has been 4 years since we last heard from him.. Last we heard he was in Thailand teaching kids..

So, we have this car, it looks absolutely aweful, its been in the back compound for years, and I now at the point where I will be legally getting ownership shortly... But I really do not know what to do with it once I own it.

On the one hand, I could break it up for spares and maybe turn the back end into a trailer as a bit of fun...

On the other hand, I really do not know when I last saw a pre-S 4.5 928, which makes it a shame to kill it... However.. the bodywork needs a complete respray and possibly some work dealing with dents..

What do you guys think?

Much call for the parts? or should it get restored? and if so, is it really worth anything if I did restore it?

Why does no one ever abandon a 1973 911 RS at the workshop???

Some pics would be interesting Jon. Always difficult with these cars, it becomes a labour of love rather than a financially viable deal.

I'd love it, and if I had the space would strip it and get it resprayed. Not sure my wife feels the same way? Is it a manual or auto Jon? I think the older cars are going to outlive the over complicated S4 and GTS.

928 engines into 944's are a real pain, the last one I did we needed to spaceframe the front end.

We have done two conversions this year where we have put an S2 engine and a 968 engine into a couple of early square dash luxes, which with their lighter weight and lower gearing really do shift... especially with a chip and an intake kit.

OK, so they are all sideways! lol

The front bumper in the pictures looks smashed, but in fact it is black under the paint and big bits of paint has fallen off!

I can think of worse cars to be abandoned with, but I guess it owes you a fair bit in unpaid labour?

It looks like an ideal project car for someone, I would think it would be good as a going concern? Certainly if I had the space and the time I'd love to take on a car like that, but I have neither, alas. As you say, it's a pity to kill a pre-S car, but it does look to need a lot of work - does it start/drive?

Last time we checked it started and drove fine, it even had an MOT.

Every year we have been starting it up probably once every 3 or 4 months just to make sure nothing seizes up, must have cost me a hundred pounds in fuel since we last met the owner!

Would be better as a project car for someone

Hi Jon :)

Yes they are lol...they are like gold dust....

For an early 928 owner they are worth serious money...last set I saw a couple of years ago on Ebay went for just over £600....

All the best Brett :)
