I am planning on changing the brake pads next week and was wondering what the logic was for changing the pad sensors as well, are they 'a must' replace or 'a good idea' to replace (apology for the numbie question )

Is there anything else that should be checked when changing the pads.

I think that the sensors only need to be changed if the pads have worn down to the level where the warning light is on. I could be wrong though

that was sort of what I was thinking. The existing pads have worn but have not worn out. Having had green stuff pads on my elise, I am finding the amount of brake dust coming off the existing 944 brakes painful to keep clean. So am hoping that I can swap the pads over without needing to change the sensors (seeing as that is another £60)

You will break the sensor getting them out. I believe they are single-use by design.

Whether or not you choose to bother replacing them is another matter

I'd rather the car was correct and present, so if that's the case i'll get some. I read somewhere that you can get them for £6. porscheshop charges £12 +P&P per one meaning it's a £60 job. where's cheapest peeps????

The only other placeI know of apart from the OPC would be Bert at Berlynn Services (http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk). He may be able to do you a TIPEC-related discount but you'd have to call to confirm. Don't forget you get a 10% discount at porscheshop too.

If you're very lucky and have the right needle nose pliers you can remove them and reuse, but they are very brittle so be careful. Bert used to have a stock of 928 sensors he was clearing out at 50p each. The sensor itself is identical to the 944 version but the wire and connector is too long. If you are prepared to cut the wire and splice it onto the wires from the old sensor they work fine. I believe I have several years worth of sensor in my garage, cheers Bert

I've ordered 944 S2/turbo ones off Bert at about £7 a piece (thanks Li). The discs are fine so it's just the pads and sensors. Found a full front and rear set of green stuffs from a caterham 7 specialist (yes 944 ones!) for £100 including P&P which isn't bad at all in my opinion. So can do the whole car for about £130

So that's my sunday sorted (weather permitting)

Just a word of caution - when I did mine recently the pads were very difficult to get in and out of the caliper. Apparently this is a common issue and I'm not just talking about crud / corrosion that can be cleaned with a wire brush, so be sure that you take extra care not to break those sensors as they are very fragile (necessarily, by design).. £7 lost is your beer money down the tubes

Li, does that mean that you need to connect to sensors prior to fitting the pads? then fit the pads with the sensor attached?

As i recall that is correct. Been several weeks now, memory like a sieve etc

LOL! OF COURSE SHE WILL NOTICE, they are evil and know everything! I can't believe how many stone chips the 944's pick up. I'm already thinking about a respray next year and have only had the car 2 months.

The '44 is a stone chip magnet I'm afraid. Look on the bright side though, you can justify a respray to SWMBO more often
