Hello Chaps

Decided to recondition my brake calipers over winter due to plate lift and paint condition.
Have had the calipers shot blasted to get rid of corrosion paint etc and powder coated.





Straightened the plates and got new bolts seals etc.

The only thing now is the Porsche logo - has anyone used the decals available or painted them?

I've hand written them in the past with Humbrol enamel, which is fine providing the wheel cleaners aren't too abrasive. Otherwise various people sell transfers on Fleabay.

Who shot blasted/powder coated them for you & how much?

Highgate House do them.

Hi, how did you manage to get the allen bolts out which hold the plates on ?

I had a bit of help on 2 counts - thanks George.

The cap heads holding the calipers to the hubs were rounded so bolts were tig welded to these to remove. (afetr removing the hub assembly)

The button heads were removed in a similar fashion.

George perhaps you can give more detail.

i did my fronts last year and am in the process of doing the rears now, i just left mine red as the Porsche logo is cast into the caliper.

What are those calipers from, they look like mine but i don't have the to large holes in the front and the bar welded to the side ?

The car is a 1988 Turbos S. As far as I know the calipers are the same as any later Turbo and the same as a 928S4. The holes are where the calipers mount to the hubs.

Maybe i'm just getting mixed up as its been a while since i did the fronts, i have just taken my rears off and they bolt on from the rear of the hub , same as nearly every other caliper.

Ok, the front Brembo calipers on the Turbo S and the S2 or early Turbo with M030 are 'radially' mounted, and the hub is different to accomodate this - hence they are 'million dollar' on eBay and at Porschapart. The strut mountings are also different, so front struts are not directly interchangeable between these cars. It's a racier way to mount your calipers - the two mounting bolts are loaded in a 'nicer' way.

You can fit these bigger brake calipers to non-M030 cars, but you require adapters to do so. Not sure what needs to be done about the brake pressure proportioning valve to compensate, other than fit the corresponding part from the relevant brakes' donor vehicle.

The rear calipers are the same fitment across all turbos and S2s, regardless of M030 and are the type mounted from behind, so to speak. the basic caliper body looks to be the same as at the front of the S2 and standard 220 Turbo, but contains smaller pistons. Not sure if Porsche varied the caliper piston diameters over the years, both front and rear?

On the welding front, the big radial mounting bolts were a pig to remove from the hub. The final solution was to TIG weld a piece of M10 threaded bar (studding) into the cup of the cap head, then screw down an M10 nut, weld that to both the bolt head and the studding, then added another nut, fully welded that to everything and then wound out the bolt with a breaker bar - it went with a big bang!

The backplate button heads had an M5 cap head screw TIG welded to the top and were wound out with an allen key.
