Need a head and or cams for a 944 S2 1991, anybody got one or know of any? Does anybody know how you measure for wear on the sprokets, I was told a worn pair are as good as scrap, is that true?

Have a ring around the breakers. Simon at ESS had some S2 parts a while ago, that's where my S2 lump came from.
As for wear on the sprockets, look for "hooking" of the teeth, 'ere is a pic
http://www.xrv.org.uk/photopost/showpho ... 1203184846
They shouldn't be THAT bad but will be to some extent. Another old trick is to try a chain on the sprockets & see what movement the rollers have.

If you can't find good cams at sensible money you can fit the 8v head. That will get you running for now. Not as daft as it at first sounds. you will lose HP but have lots of torque. Lots available. Your existing head should be sorted for around the £150 mark. But it may take patience to source the cams. The exchange rate has messed it up for now. In 12 months it will probably be more favourable.

AFAIK the head that fits is the 2.7 & when I looked they weren't cheap & ain't common. The manifolds will need changing as well as the management.

This guy did the conversion. He might be worth a try for cams as well as he makes them. http://www.cncheads.co.uk/index.html

You could be right Jim. The car did well on the dyno & it was done do save the cost of new cams when they were cheaper than they are now. There may have been some machining involved. The manifolds can be got for peanuts on ebay. Not sure what they did about the management. Porsche apart http://www.porsch-apart.co.uk/ will have some cams/head but they may not be cheap.

The 2.7 heads are the ones that people want for the 3.0 turbo conversions so they are quite sought after, plus the valves are big bucks, when you consider the 2.7 block can be used too I think any slightly tatty 2.7 944 will probably get broken for parts.

Hi,

Don't have the parts details in front of me but I may have a stripped down 944s head (16v) Not sure if they are the same (as i don't have the parts info!). I also have some cams from the above. and a few other bits.

and an airbox.
etc.

My car finally choked back into life this morning after 1 1/2 years of being sat there doing nowt.

:)

Probably a bit involved but I did see a conversion on the web somewhere, 2 s2 exhaust cams and a longer cambelt.
I assume one was reground but it does do away with the chain.
I have the same problem with a 968 cam missing a tooth on the engine I was going to put in my lux.
Will try and find the link.

Not sure how this works all of the engines 8V & 16V including the 968 run a belt for one cam & the other turns using the chain linking it.

Looking at the pic it seems the inlet cam is replaced with the exhaust cam which would be ground to be an inlet cam, having pulled the 968 head apart i can see how this would be possible.
Not 100% sure the extra pulley would clear the bonnet though.
If anybody has a spare broken exhaust cam I could mock it up in my 968 head to see if its possible.
No idea what a custom cam grind would cost though.
The other issue would be sourcing cambelts, but would be an interesting project.
(the pic is of an s2 engine)

Hi,

The are 's' cams

sorry, but didn't have any part numbers to hand when i saw the post.

Good luck finding them, keep an eye on e-bay, there are a few breakers that advertise on there but they were not that cheap.

PM Me an email address, I will get some pics in a few days, having just got the thing started today I am holding the 'spares' for a short while :D

Edit: BTW wildbilly, there is a 3.0 on ebay at present, complete and running (apparently) maybe an option to drop that in the car and sell the salvage from your unit?
