Walked back to my car the other day in Southampton (fortunately I had parked face into the space) to see a dark puddle under the car.

On checking, I have a hole in my tank, under the retaining strap!

i'd take it off, fill it with sand...
or try a radiator repair specialist, have it brazed or whatever they can do to them.




whatever you do, take it off the car.

steam clean it inside and out.

What ever you do remove it from the car

Any fumes in the tank will constitute an explosive mixture with air

Answered on your other thread, easiest toeither use the Frosts system or send it to your local Serck Marston or radiator specialist.

Don't fill it with sand, you will never get it all out again, either get one of the chemicals that are around to cleanse the tank of fuel or run another cars exhaust fumes throung it for a while.

OR depending on how bad it is, get some Petro Patch from Halfords

the hole is about half the size of one of these so in the short term I'm going to use a petrol tank patch (at least until my Octavia is back on the road)

tank is fully drained now and when the patch is on I'm going to renew the rubber hoses while I'm at it.....

I had a si milar problem with the tank on my 924S with it going porous under the retaining strap, I removed the strap drained the fuel, cleaned up the area and applied JB Weld (metal based epoxy) this I then painted and it has been fine since even when filling the tank with 60l. It has lasted 3 years to date with no signs of leaking or further rusting.

Never ever weld a fuel tank unless you are absolutely positive you have purged it there is still no guarantee and its a potential bomb.

if you are taking the tank out to weld it then replace it with a second hand one is my advice

Are the later plastic ones interchangable with the earlier steel ones? I have an 88 924S - I guess it has a steel tank - if I need to replace, can I use a plastic one from a later 944? PET shows 477 201 021 for 924S and 944 'early' but I can't find entry for 944 'late' Steve

Later plastic tanks take a different fuel sender so this will have to be purchased as well to upgrade to later tank and fitment from loom to sender is also different but an auto electrician would be able to sort this. Hope this helps
