Post subject: | Trans Axle Oil Type Help |
Hi everyone, New to the forum. I was on here a few years ago, but I kind of shelved the 944 projoect for while. Now it's my daily driver so pushing hard to fix lots of the annoying things that the Sunday drive never picked up. I am changing the trans-axle oil. I know how to do it and the pitfalls etc.......... However, trying to find the correct oil is doing my head in!!!! I have an 1989, 2.7L 944, Manual with 151,000 miles on it (Obviously that could be wrong as I had to fix the mushy cog!). I know it has to be GL4. Have seen 75W-90 being recommended (my manual says MIL-L2105). Another worry is there are some 944s with LSD and NLSD, apparently that makes a difference? Don't know which I have!!! The Red Line MT90 GL4 comes up alot, is that OK??? Help!!! Rachel |

Hi Rachel You 99.9% won't have an LSD in your car, unless someone has done a transplant or it was specced from the factory. Either way using a good synthetic 75/90 will do the job, LSD or no LSD. You will need about 2 litres. Always make sure you can open the fill plug before you remove the drain plug! If your box is a bit noisy, and you want to quieten it down a bit, go for Swepco. It has a very long service life as well, it's quite thick and its blue, and benefits from being pumped in to the box rather than poured. I have Swepco 201 in my car, with LSD. It's good for non LSD also. Cheers Stuart |
