OK... my gear gator is nicely sealed up with no cracks or splits...however, I am still getting fumes in the car.
This is only when I have the windows cracked open....so no fumes when window/sunroof closed. Since I have been using it more I have been putting petrol to over half way so am noticing it more....been a bit of a skinflint over the last few months.

The rear light seals are also good. I have also sealed up the rear boot wells of the car with the correct plugs etc.

So, having looked at my rear hatch seals the 'round' profile bit looks rather squishy and less round, rather flat.

Before I play parts Lotto, is this the likely cause? I can't see what else it could be.

I also have the same symptoms currently with my 944 - have sealed the tail-lights and new boot seal, sunroof seals and plugs in storage compartments.

I think I may have an exhaust leak somewhere that is making it worse, have you checked for exhaust leaks?

I got my boot seal off an ebay seller so wondering if the profile could be wrong after reading some comments about them on other forum threads...

You talking petrol fumes or exhaust?

mixture of both really.....probably more petrol...but a bit hard to tell! But no smell at all with windows up and spooning it around...just with the windows cracked open....

with the windows open you are creating a low pressure zone inside the car, you must have a leak somewhere on top of the tank or the filler neck,

with the windows open it sucks air in through the slots around the sides of the rear window, stick ya nose in there,

If an early car with metal tank could be that or filler neck or its the tailgate seal.

Thanks..it's an '88 924s..if that's early. I have checked the filler neck by taking all the padding and metal casing off...man that stuff is sticky...I hope it is just the boot seal...

All those clips are fully tightened and I bet the hoses still move about, age is a horrid thing, I bet all those hoses need replacing

Had a good look today...all hoses in situ and no moving around. Inspected fuel level sender gasket.....looked a bit warped to me...cleaned everything up and put a smear of black RTV sealer around seal and tightened down. Will give it a test on Sunday when time allows. Hoping above hope it's just the seals that look really flat...couldn't cope with dropping the metal tank!

Is it metal, most tanks were plastic by 88

well, the top is magnetic definitely metal...found quite a large split in the external filler neck rubber bit that houses the fuel cap. Alls sorts of fun this!

There were no plastic tanks fitted to the 924 throughout it's production span.

get a spray bottle of water with some washing up liguid in.
spray it over that filler and the pipes/hoses. bubbles will come up on any leeks,
