944 Wiper Arm Nut Cover - 3D Print

Post by vsl_london »

Following my little project replacing the windshield wiper motor on my 944, I noticed that one of the small covers on the wiper arm is missing. While not strictly essential, it does seem to protect the wiper arm nut from the elements and subsequently corrosion (and lets face it, in UK conditions any rust prevention is a blessing).

Doing a bit of digging around, it seems that Porsche has discontinued the original part (part #: 944.628.305.00) and replaced it with a simpler updated cover (part #: 944.628.305.01).

Seeing as I've been messing around with the 3D printer lately, I decided to re-create the original part. The end result actually ended up being slightly sturdier that the original (I went with a slightly thicker design and additional support on the bottom) and whats more the fit is now quick tight, whereas the original part would rattle around a bit.

After a quick sand down (to get rid of printing imperfections) and a lick of gloss black paint, the covers are back on, and look the part.

So, if anyone does require the original cover, by all mean give me a shout, would be happy to send you out a pair.

Seeing as more parts are becoming quite hard to come by and the plastic in our cars is starting to crack, it looks like 3D printing is the way to go. In fact, my 996 C2 is also using my design for a cap cover for the steering rack (which was not included in the reconditioned unit, and the original had cracked). If anyone needs a plastic part designed and printed for their car, I'm open to project suggestions :)

Hi.
One of my caps went missing when I put my Lux in for a respray, so I could do with a pair. How much do you need to cover your costs?

Hi mate.
Couple of quid to cover the postage should suffice, as long as it's UK postage :)
Cheers

Had my new caps yesterday, fitted them this morning. A very good fit, and showed just how flimsy the original ones are.
The only downside is that they show how shabby my wiper arms look. Oh well, one more job.
Thanks again V

Hi,

New to the forum. Came across the wiper motor post as I am just spraying my tatty wiper arms and realised that I have no caps for the fixing bolts. Thought I'd check out if there might be alternatives that someone might have found as a pair from VWHeritage or Design911 are £48 delivered!!

The vsl_london 3D printing is a really good idea. I know the post was from 4 years ago, but I was wondering if the 3D printed caps were still available...

Cheers,

Pete
