Thanks Jim. I was able to adjust the balance belt an hour ago without removing all the other belts. All good so far..........and back 'in time'....

Hi Guys....

So, took her out today for a good 30 min blast......felt a bit strained, 'vibration City' coming back...checked the belts and the lower balance belt was 160 degrees off...near 1 o'clock when at TDC rather than 7 o'clock......it was all in time last week!.....is it just a case of aligning in time again and tightening a bit more...or is there something more sinister afoot?! I can twist the belt nearer 200 degrees, though 'Mr Arnnworx' says its in spec............oh the joys.....

All comments welcome.

Thanks,

Michael

Never had problems with Balance belts. They are a pig to line up because the balance weights take over & I've typically used a third hand to help. Sounds to me like it has slackened off & then skipped teeth. Balance belt is a Krikit job again. It should be looser than the cambelt but not massively so.

Thanks Jim...beginning to fall out of love with my expensive 'paper weight'.....er, I mean Arnnworx tool.....just a bit too subjective....oh well, a nice little job to do then later on in the week....having read alot around this subject I have learnt I am not alone when it comes to this tool and the auto tensioner.....though this should not effect the balance belt....it's just not doing it for me!

OK...

So something is off. I have inspected my Timing belts and they over hang the cam by 1-2mm, there is also a little mark on the inside. See pictures below. Some pulley must be off, though I have not touched the cam and the auto spring tensioner is set properly to the block. Has to be down by the crank I guess...

I suppose at least if I take the belts off I won't have to change the water pump......

Any clues please?

Thanks,

M

Classic mistake I've seen that can do this is if the crank pulley is put on back to front, also on a recent edredas video I watched on youtube someone had bodged the tensioner mounting (early manual tensioner). I would refer to the Porsche manual / PET and check that all pulleys, bolts and washers are where they should be.

Well, well, well..........turns out the crank pulley is on the wrong way round..........don't really remember taking it off but then again.....should be quite an easy fix...getting my monies worth on the Arnnworx flywheel locking tool at least.........

You have done this enough times now, not to need the tensioner tools, you should be able to do it by feel

I did it wrong first time, the lower tensioner for the balance belt you tighten anti clockwise, I could never get it all in the right place.

Edredas from Rennlist has a youtube channel and a nifty way of fitting the balance shaft belt - worked for me.

Basically instead of trying to fit the belt with everything perfectly timed you set the balance shafts slightly out of time (1 tooth / 10 degrees) that way when you take out the slack from the belt with the tensioner the balance shafts will be aligned instead of out of alignment. Follow the video for process -

Whereabouts are you? I'm based near Worcester if you need a second pair of eyes
