Now that the 968 has secured its position in my Life, I think I need to see how practical I can make it.. Devon beckons for a Spring Surf, and want to make sure I can get down there with my 'board strapped up top.. So.. Roof Racks.. What are my options?

Obviously would like the Porsche Roof Transport kit, can you buy this any more..?

Do Thule do a similar / as secure setup..?

There was one one the bay of fleas a couple of years ago, never seen another one for sale

I did notice it said in the Telequip catalogue 944/968/928 and Cabrio, now a roof rack on a cab sounds down right dangerous

I have had my eye out for a genuine roof rack for the time I have had the car but I have never seen one or sale. in the end and because I need to transport a set of wheels in the next week or so, I just converted an old Paddy Hopkirk roof rack I found on ebay to fit my 944.

It took a little while to find a base roof rack that had metal feet I could weld to and once I found the correct type (gutterless with rubber base feet) I made a bracket to allow me to secure the rack to the bolts on the C pillar at the hatch. Its not the prettiest rack in the world but it does the job I built it for and is secured in two places. You don't want to just have the rear secured on the plastic strip or you could lose the rack if the plastic trim comes away.

I came on here to start a thread about roof racks and was very happy to see this thread. Unfortunately a lot of the older threads have become redundant due to photobucket removing the photos.

This is fantastic! I have been trying to get a rack sorted for my 944 so i can put my bike on the roof. Do you happen to know what the original fitment was for your roof rack? I have read on a forum somewhere that a rover rack is a direct fit, however locating one of them is just as hard as finding the correct porsche one.

Do you have any more photos of your rack?

Thanks for any help in advance.

The rack was universal and I just made sure it had rubber pads and I could weld to the base feet.

These are the brackets I made but this will be different depending on the type of rack you can source, I couldn't get a brand new rack with metal feet so had to look for an old style rack.

And as it was set up for driving through France.
