 Post subject: S2 broken valve spring

Went out for a couple of takeaway pizzas last night and the S2 develped a misfire on the way back.
Located to no 3 cylinder by pulling plug lead and heard a click from the top end.
Took off cam cover broken spring quite obvious.
Went to eat my pizza and glug a few glasses of very nice chianti.
Anyone done this without pulling the head?

If you core out an old spark plug, and then solder in a PCL connector for an air line

Put the cylinder at bdc and pressure it up it should hold the valve shut while you change the spring

Used to do loads of V8 merc engines with busted springs

Sorted,Used the airline method thanks for the tip.
Took a while, replacing collets was tricky and cam needed retiming. Only pulled the inlet cam but a lot of fasteners to undo and slow and steady .

I think this has happened to mine too, was in the middle of nowhere in the middle of France on Friday and suddenly got a misfire and slight clattery noise, still drove fine but under-powered. Pulled the plug leads to find no change to the way it ran on cylinder 4, I'm hoping no other collateral damage as a result? Also I'm home but the car is still in middle France, nipping back at the weekend to get it.

Just wanting to ask, did the compressor way work well, ie the spring compressor didn't push the valve down any, what sort of air pressure was required and what kit did you use? The rope idea is a new one on me but does made sense?

The compressor trick worked a treat. I used an adapter from a compression testing kit. You could use a spark plug with the center knocked out and a hose attached. My compressor is nothing special just kept it running at 90 psi. The valve spring compressor is one I found on ebay the Porsche one is so simple a decent engineer could knock one up in 30 mins. I use a magnetic probe to catch the collets and do plug the oil drain holes in the head or you'll have a bigger problem. I set the piston half way up the bore just in case the valve decided to drop. Trickiest bit was making sure cams were timed correctly. It was an inlet spring that went so I only had to remove the inlet cam. Just mark up chain and sprockets and don't move the crank. I checked the timing anyway and got it spot on. Good youtube video on the procedure from our German freund.
I only drove 1/2 a mile gently but both springs were broken, I was lucky not to have bent a valve at least. The car actually runs better now probably due to setting the cam timing. When refitting the chain tensioner be careful with the banjo washers one of mine ended uo in the sump a dab of grease should keep them in place, I'd taken the rags out like a dumbo.
I'll check everthing this summer when I drop the engine.

I have the correct fitting for the compressor from a leak down tester so that one less thing required, I have bought a lever type tool for the spring removal (like you say one could be made very easily) and will lock the crank in its position in case the pressure spins the crank.

I was doing 90mph when it went and had to limp a further 6km to the service station, there is a little noise but it doesn't sound major but I will put a endoscope down the bore to see if everything looks fine before starting work on removing the spring(s) and do a leak down test once the new springs are fitted.

I found out today it's not a valve spring that's broken but my exhaust cam has snapped in two over cylinder 4 and one tappet over cylinder 3, the cam journel has also broken and I suspect a bolt has come loose on the journel as one was only finger tight.

I was looking for broken spring for about 20 minutes because I thought it had to be spring as nothing else looked out of place, then I spotted a crack on the cam journel and from then on I spotted the cam had snapped. :twisted:

Luckily I have a spare camshaft and should have it back up and running over the weekend.

Is it repairable or is it head off to check for piston damage and get a secondhand head

The head doesn't need to come off luckily, the valves closed when the cam broke so I checked the compression and its good and I have had a borescope inside the bore to check there was nothing untoward in there

are valve spring failures common? Just in process of installing new cam but springs look okay even though they are original..
