Hi All
Re-joined after a long gap.
Been working on getting the 944 out of the garage and onto the road.
Sorted a few bits out and got it through the MOT, but have advisories on the tyres being a bit perished and cracked.
The current ones are Toyo T1 from a rather long time ago.

Looking for tyres now, there are not too many options where I can get a matched set for the forged Design 90s (front 225/50 R16, rear 245/45 R16).
I can source some Toyo T1-Rs for about £90 each from mytyres.co.uk.
But does anyone have any other ideas/sources/sizes that would work?

TIA
Nick

I just go on tyreleader.co.uk

Put the sizes in and see who’s got a matching set

Don’t be put off by some of the Far East tyres, they are very good these days, in fact Toyos are from there

I have GT Radial Champiro HPY on my 968, they have now done 18k and I’m seriously impressed, but they don’t make them any more

So next set will be Nangkang NS2, I don’t race or track the car so they are more than good enough

Thanks. I hadn't come across tyreleader. Good site.
In fact I was looking at the Nankang tyres, but they don't do the NS2 in 245/45, just the AS2. But then no AS2 in 225/50
Again the Proxes are the only ones in both sizes.
That's why I was wondering if there was any way one could use very slightly different sizes?
Also after some more reading have picked up that the Toyos aren't particularly good.

Well you could go 255/40/16, I would avoid going bigger on the front it will upset the balance and steering a bit, bigger on the back is not so bad

The Toyos seem to get terrible reviews now, unless they're used on very light cars. The sidewalls are too soft for something like a 944. I'd avoid them.

There are tons of 225 50 16 for the front but for the rear the choice is slim, Toyo as you say can do all 4 corners and also Conti Sport Contact 2 iirc. The Conti's almost twice the price. I've used Toyo mostly for 10 years but have experimented with different brands on the front and as Martin says lots of decent stuff about these days away from the premium manufacturers for reasonable money, just do your homework. The Toyo's do wear quickly but grip well in the dry. They are ok but not brilliant in the wet. Depends how much you shove it about in damp conditions. The Conti's a bit better in the wet and last a bit longer.....at double the price!

Toyo sidewalls are quite soft as Blade says but I find they are ok at 36psi which is recommended. I know a lot of people run less pressure which would increase sidewall flex.

Thanks for the input folks
Can't find the larger tyres anywhere I'm afraid - I liked that idea!
I could go all Toyo, but I've not been massively impressed.
So that leaves mixes..
The two types of Nankang
Nankang rear and Hankook front.....etc.
. Argggh.

I suppose new wheels are also possible, but I love my 90s

I’ve bought quite a few tyres from Blackcircles and been impressed by service and prices.

Looked on their site and can see very few choices for the rears, but they do have Nankang Sportnex NS2 in both sizes you need, so you could have them all round.

Correction they are NS2 at rear, but AS2 at front. At least not mixing brands!

coming down to 235/45 R16 does give you a lot more options

I know its a bit VW balloon tyres look, but not by much

Or put them away and get a cheap set of boxster rims

Anyone have any experience of Nankang tyres?
Thought I might try them and then just read some German magazine review of tyres where they came bottom of nearly every test!

Not an expert on wheels by any stretch, you might need spacers

I have a set of 18 split rims from a boxster the rears fit fine, fronts need a set of 20mm spacers

Completely different set up I know, but I fitted a set of Conti Sport Contacts on my A4 quattro a few years back. And the wet/snow grip was amazing. Premium tyres are worth the extra £££ on something like a 944 turbo that only does a few k miles each year. I usually balance wear v age, ie replace them around year 6-7.

So - a few days on - nothing but frustration....
There are actually no tyres around that will fit the wheels.
I've tried everywhere that I can find on the net, but you can't get matching front and rears from anyone.
I kind of gave up on the cheaper ones and tried to get Contis, but struck out there too.

So I was looking on eBay and found some Cup alloys off an old '83 944....
Porsche Cup 1 Style 17" Wheels
2x Front wheels (215/45) Offset: ET15
2x Rear wheels (255/40) Offset: ET25

Do you think they would fit?
