Post subject:  Speakers front.

So I have decided to go retro and return the front speakers in my 944 to how they were.

Questions:
- I can see speaker covers on eBay, I need them in blue. Anyone know a good supplier?
- I know there is not much space, are there any modern speakers that will fill the space ok but have the same screw positions?
- Do I need anything else behind there, I can see mounting plates on eBay, do I need these?
- Is there anything else I need?

Thank you

The mounting plates are for rear speakers, to allow you to fit 6x4" speakers. Some cars came with bigger rear speakers,3 way things, and most likely be toast. My car had these but I removed them, used the plates, and installed Alpine 6x4's. On the fronts the 6x4's are a straight bolt onto the door frame. There should be rubber covers behind them to shield from moisture. The colour coded front speaker grills would need to come from Porsche or find the right ones on ebay.

I have 6" round speakers in the front on mine, but that requires some metal cutting and chopping of the door cards to suit. As this had been done by a PO I just replaced with new 6" round. I do have all the stuff to put it back to standard as well as two minty fresh door cards (which look unused), but haven't bothered as of yet to do it!

Any modern 6x4's will fit in the factory locations, they are not expensive, £30 for Alpine's and £15 upwards for less good ones.

Fantastic Stuart, thank you for the information.

Many of the 6x4 won't fit very well.
The tweeter part sits high and the grill then won't sit flush.

Alpines aren't too bad.

Obviously there is bugger all bass in these tiny cones,
I've previously fitted one of these under the passenger seat on my 924's, to add a wee bit of bass to make the sound a bit more rounded.

As Jason says, many 6x4s won't fit because the voice coil assembly is too deep or too wide. The door metalwork has a basket recess which either accepts the speaker back or doesn't. I tried various options (some of which claimed to fit) but none did and allow the front to sit flush with the door card. In the end I bought the official replacements from Porsche which were a perfect fit as you'd expect.

I noticed that JMG Porsche is offering an Alpine kit which they claim fits. Jon knows these cars better than just about anyone else so I'd be inclined to trust his guidance.

Don't be expecting any killer bass because you will be disappointed. It makes you realise how much ICE has progressed in 30 years.

Good luck with it.

That's a fair point about the grills fouling the speakers due to being a flush fit, hadn't thought of that. There is more leeway with the rear speakers I think. All speakers will bolt onto the door but you may have grill issues due to the cones on certain models. A safe bet to get the ones from Jon @ JMG.

Thanks guys, great advice.

I have the grills and the drains now.

Next step is to pull the Alpine stereo which is ultra modern and go a bit retro with an old Blaupunct stereo. I need to see if the old car stereo plugs are attached to the loom, or after 30 years see if someone has cut them off. It will guide me to the stereo I want to use, and the speakers I want to fit. Originals sound like the way to go for a flush fitting.

I may leave the rears alone. The previous owner has jammed some really ugly speakers in the front doors. I really want to go retro and return the grills back.

Fingers crossed.

Original speakers are NLA

the original speaker covers for 6x4 are available in satin black 944 555 149 01 @£75.97 each, none of the original radios are available even exchange

It does not matter if the original plugs are there or not, these days everything is an ISO standard, even stereo plugs, just sort the wiring to ISO standard and you can swap stereos when and to whatever you want

Thank you. Good plan.

Waylander had prompted my memory. When I enquired with my local OPC at the time they also said the original speakers were NLA but had a replacement under 944 645 951 00. The form and fit were identical with the exception that the replacement was a 1 way design rather than having the coaxial 2 way design of the original. Not sure if this "new" item is still available but they fitted under the original grills without any issues. I couldn't tell any difference in the sound except that the annoying buzz had disappeared.

The original head unit in my car (and I think most of the cooking 944's at the time) was a Panasonic and I've seen a few from 1986 with the same unit. I understood that these were fitted by Porsche GB. I think you had to buy the full 10 speaker system to get a Blaupunkt head unit. I'm not sure what situation existed in 1989 when the 2.7 was current. There are some quite cost effective and retro looking Blaupunkt units available now which fit and look okay and can be had with DAB if you need it.

Good luck with it

Thanks for the information all.

I have a special blue tooth thingy I can plugin in a connect to a hifi, the quality is good. I had in in my P38 Rangie that I restore a few years back.

I like the Blaupunct units that hold a hidden CD that does a b&w SatNav. It looks retro but has a hidden and useful feature.

So took the horrible covers off the front and found these speakers contained there in. I think the original grills may go over.

Also found a mystery wire (2nd photo) (will post separately as well). Any clue? Nothing to do with the mirror. And does not seem to be in the other door (though it could be)! LED in the lock know?

I did a search online for 'slimfit' 6x4 speakers - cant remember what I ended up with but they did fit well. I put the pioneer 6x4 in the back I think.
