Ok, so getting to know my car.

Previous owner said it was not an AC model, which on looking about the engine bay I would agree with.

BUT

The heater knob in the car has the temp marks on like a climate control would, without AC what would be the point? Or do they all have the temps around the edge? Also.....

In the fuse box, the is a relay present for AC Pump??

Any views? Thank you.

If your car has aircon their will be a button on the climate control unit with the A/C symbol, also you will have an A/C receiver / drier located at the front left side of the engine bay which the A/C hoses go to and from.

The climate control is a separate item and uses a temperature sensor located next to the LCD clock to read the interior temperature and adjust the heating to the setting you select with the dial.

As he says!

All UK turbos had AC. Very very very very very few non turbo cars had it. On a turbo you will see 2 main AC pipes going past the NS side of the engine. In an AC specced non turbo car you will only see one. A shiny metal hard pipe with a filling valve on it although you actually charge the system at the compressor. AC cars have 3 buttons on the control panel. Demist, recirc and AC with the snowflake on it.

Ah ok, I under stand.

No AC button just a temp knob with a blue dot and temperatures up to 30 I think.

Was excited when I saw the AC pump relay!!!

Maybe a project down the line to add after market. I do like a challenge.

Not cheap. A recon compressor can be had for about £350. New ones much dearer. The condenser is pricey too IIRC about £400 and it is not common or widely available and almost always useless 2nd hand. You can get a receiver/dryer for about £20 right enough but OEM is over £100. Then you would need pipework, plumbing, seals, pressure switches, loom, heater control unit, alternator bracket and belt. Plus more. A hell of a lot of cost and work.

The cost of repairs to a non functioning car equipped with AC is by and large prohibitive never mind a full retrofit. I got off relatively lightly by getting an almost perfect 2nd hand condenser for £100, drier for £20 and a recon compressor for £350 and having a mate to pressure test it, vac it and fill it for beer tokens.

Might try and get mine working a some point - carparts4less now carry rebuilt a/c compressors for our cars which are rebuilt by Lucas - I purchased one of their rebuilt alternators earlier this year which turned out to be an original Bosch unit in a Lucas box with a full test report and looked brand new. Bonus was it was less than £250! I think the a/c compressor is also around the same price...

As regards the condenser I wouldn't bother with an original. NOt Pork but 3 years ago had our MX5 a/c rebuilt. Mk1 & 2 condensers are NLA these days, so the specialist installed a universal one. All in including remaking pipes it was £380. They do lots of Porsches including 928s.
