Hi all,

Thanks for the warm welcome so far, I had a question about a car I am close to buying. Its an '86 LUX (with a 3.0 S2 engine) but it doesn't have any rear seats in it. Is anyone aware if there is a possibility to retrofit lap belts into it without much modification? Are the rear seats bolted in and does it require removal?

I don't have the car yet so I'm unable to check but one of the assumptions i'm making is that the lap belts can be retrofitted, I'd like to know if that's possible from you knowledgeable folk, and also if there are any specific types of seat belts that I need to purchase (or is it fairly generic)?

PS - I've done a search and the main content that I could find was related to 3-point belts but i'm currently looking at lap belts only.

Many thanks all.

Rear belts were law in Europe long before they were compulsory here. So generally a lot of cars sold across Europe have the fixings in place.
My go to place for any sort of seatbelt work is Quickfit SBS https://www.quickfitsbs.com/
Quickfit have made custom belts for me for various cars, including colour matched ones.

Just checked rear belts had to be fitted 1st April 87 wearing for adults started in 1991

Thank you, good info. When I get the car I’ll check to see if there are fixings in place, the car is September 86 so I’m hoping even though there are none in there , hopefully mounting points exist. Thanks for the link too.

My '86 had lap belts when I got it in ’97. I swapped them out for fixed 3 point belts when the kids were little. All the fixings were there for 3 point belts. The lap belts will be in the garage somewhere...

Hi jim,

That's good info to know, many thanks. Also if you are able to locate the lap belts and you no longer need them i'm happy to buy them off you. Although I guess it depends how much stuff is in your garage as to whether you'll be able to find them, I sometimes put things away thinking they're safe only to never be found again :)

Thanks for the info, and if you do manage to find them and don't need them please let me know. Thanks.
Harry

My 1986 Lux had the bolt holes in place to fit rear seat belts. I never bothered but with the seats removed it was easy to see the locations

Think they are under those old moth eaten front seats you have been trying to knock out for donkeys years Jim? 8)

I just can’t understand why you would compromise safety for one extra bolt and go for lap belts over 3 point, not my problem I just don’t get it

Appreciate the responses all. As I dont have the car yet it's difficult for me to be certain what will fit and what wouldn't. Clearly if I uncover it all and see there's space for a 3 point harness that will be what I'll do. Currently in my old SL and the 80's 911 I had previously both had lap belts.

Thanks again for the replies all! I'll be sure to update the thread once I have the car.

This really isnt true.

All 944s had fixed laps until 1987 when rear inertia belts were fitted to meet new regulations. Earlier cars can take fixed three point belts (all 924 derived cars have three mounting points per side at the rear), but do not have the mounting brackets fitted to accommodate the inertia reel.

Inertia laps were available as an option and they were standard on '86 Turbos.

I had a set for years, but sold them here about a decade ago.
