Hi all I got half a mile from home the other day and a smoke started venting from the bonnet edges, I stopped the car immediately. No coolant left in the expansion tank I dipped the oil and there is emulsified oil/water below the main body of oil on the dipstick. I guess the rotten head gasket trap has got me. As I don’t have an end less funds and the car in its current state has lost most of its value, I intend to slowly but surely repair this engine myself. I am currently reflecting on how to go about this. I have a reasonable garage and work bench and tooling etc. Any advice on firstly extracting the engine would be great, such as engine stands/ methods of removal etc. I am hoping to turn this tragic event around, I am not in any rush. You shouldn't need to remove the engine but it may make it a bit easier. Luckily you stopped it quickly and the engine will not have got too hot. When I got my S2 it had a history of blown head gasket. Unfortunately unknown to me at the time the pistons had picked up and the bores were badly scored I was lucky and found a really good low milage engine to swap. Just pull the head, check bores and head for flatness. Fingers crossed it may be just a new gasket and a light head skim. |

Head gasket set £102 after code, the sell a big end bearing set for £59 quid standard set will these be okay or have I got to buy another size due to wear etc? |

If you are going to strip the engine then get the crank journals miked up. You will only need o/s shells if the crank needs a regrind due to ovality. Don't buy anything (other than head gasket) until you've checked everything. One thing to replace is the crankshaft main bearing shells as one will be the crank end thrust and will probalbly be well worn. It is possible to measure the end float before you remove the crank. I've rebuilt loads of engines and the golden rule is measure, clean, clean and clean again. Slow methodical, constantly checking, replace piston rings and con rod bolts, use correct gasket cements, be accurate with torque settings use assembly lube and be meticulously clean. Depends how far you want to go and how deep your pockets are. |

Thanks for the advice emdoman, much appreciated. I have had a long think about this over the weekend and will probably endeavour to change the head gasket in the first instance. Any advice with this minimum scope of work required initially. My main concern with the whole job is maintaining the valve train timing. Any advice on this would be most welcome. Thank you Mark |

Got a quote from the Head Shop at Warrington for a strip, clean,skim and rebuild with new guide seals on my spare head for £95 +vat. Will be more if any guides and or valves need replacing but good value and they have a very good reputation. Cheaper than the valve spring compressor from Porsche but it's so simple you could fabricate your own. |
