Hi all
last week check fluids ect thought take car for spin so cranked it over and noticed no oil pressure on start up
immediately stopped it and took out dme relay and wanged it over again ,
came back home and searched forums ect .
so today iv had a quick try putting oil down filter hole using a gearbox oil bottle but not really any joy still no pressure so thought maybe try filling engine to see if its a cracked sump pick up tube then if that dont work try and get underneath to get to the oil valve.
how much oil do you have to put in if its cracked (depends where the crack is i here you say )
any help or suggestions gratefully received

Check the pressure sender hopefully it's just an electrical fault

Try a mechanical oil pressure gauge screwed in place of sender to check for oil pressure.

thanks for the reply's guys il have look see if i got a manual oil gauge if not poss get one and get some more engine oil do you know if its def the outer holes you fill not the inner ps i should of also said the little red light at bottom of oil pressure gauge stays lit as well.

So I finally got round to getting a oil pressure gauge kit from eBay but the fittings were too small so ended up using my compression tester as same diameter as switch outcome was no pressure, so I took off the gauge part and just left the hose on and no oil came out while cranking over . I’m assuming if it was a stuck or broken pressure relief valve would some oil come out or not which would then narrow it down to either broken pickup pipe, oil pump nut loose which I haven’t checked yet I’m so slow. Any advice welcome

The oil pump is driven from the crank via a friction / compression seal from the high torque of the crank nut, might be worth checking that the pulley assembly on the end of the crank isn't loose (it should be about 210 Nm). Also could be a fracture of the oil pickup tube inside the sump - only way to diagnose that (that I know of) would be to remove the oil pan and inspect. What has led to the condition of no oil pressure? Has the engine been partially dismantled previously etc? If you remove any of the oil system, cooler etc it can take a lot of cranking to build up oil pressure again.

If the crank bolt has come loose (the 210NM one), you will have no oil pressure. It will not have come loose on its own, however if it has ever been off for any reason it may not have been tightened correctly and worked loose. You can in theory test for a cracked pick-up pipe by overfilling the engine oil and cranking it. If you start to see pressure with the engine massively overfilled with oil then your pick-up pipe is the culprit. I've also read about priming the pump, which there is a technique for, but not something I've had to do. As previously mentioned a synopsis of how you ended up with no pressure would assist diagnosis! Stuart

Hi all in reply I’ve had this car since 2013 and have only done work on it myself steering rack exhaust bearings tyres ect ,nothing major as you can see in my various posts over the years. I went out in it no problems parked it up and when I came to use it again possibly 2 weeks later just no oil pressure I have ,I assume an engine mounting vibration but on tick over I originally thought cracked pick up tube but tbh I don’t know how much oil I can put in engine without doing any damage it was full on dip stick and I bought 2.5 ltr of oil and also put in poss half of a 5 ltr tin I had lying around and cranked it to no joy I have jacked it up both osf and nsf till back wheel was off floor hoping it would pick up on the tube if it was cracked or fell off could still be I need more oil in engine it is 1 inch at least above the top mark on it as I’ve just checked .

Purely for test purposes you want a lot of overfill just to see if pressure comes up. I'm not sure how much, EDH on pcgb done it and got his car back from Germany. His pick up pipe had broken. Do a bit of research but I'd imagine you'd be adding about 5 litres over normal max capacity as the amount in the sump will need to pass the fracture point of the pickup tube. Overfill was only a couple of litres IIRC, tube was cracked close to its base. I'd be very surprised if the pump just lots its prime after a couple of weeks. I found priming the oil pump to be a complete PITA - the only method that worked for me was using a vacuum pump on the OPRV hole to suck the oil through.

Is it steel or alloy? Bits that size floating about in an engine is never normally a good thing Is it an 8 or 16v engine
