Hi, does anyone know what causes this noise?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjxR_fI8WcY

Mine has been doing it for awhile.

Thanks, but isn’t that in the front? This noise comes from the rear.

It's hard to tell from the video where the noise is coming from, but it was interesting the way it changed when the gearshift was moved

Think you need to get that up in the air and have a listen with a stethoscope

Thanks,

Car is off to a garage at the end of the week.

I’m no expert, but my guess at the moment is the coupler between the Torque Tube and Gearbox.

Will update post when I know more.

I had the exact same symptoms and noise on my 924 which turned out to be the springs on the clutch plate were knackered. The noises resonate down the torque tube so its quite difficult to locate the true source.

Easiest way to tell is if you take the rubber inspection cover off the gearbox, put your hand through and grab the torque tube you'll be able to twist it round by quite a bit (engine in neutral) where there's slack in the springs. In theory there should be next to no play as your fighting against the springs.

Note: I know some 944's have the rubber centered clutch so I might be wrong but worth checking

That certainly could explain it.

In any other car I would have said clutch for sure.

One thing I’m sure of is; Whichever area it’s coming from, it’s going to be expensive.

I did the clutch on mine last year on the garage floor with a couple of trolley jacks and spending an hour a night got it done in about 12 hours. It's not to bad a job (I know the 944 had more hydraulics to deal with than a 924) but just working through it logically it all went fine.

Covered it here: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1006375

Soon as I dropped the clutch it was obvious the springs were done as I could move the centre splined hole by quite a bit before it hit the springs. On the bright side it had a manufacturing date of July 1981 and still a fair amount of meat left on it so backed up the 78k on the clock.

Good luck

When the rubber centre of the clutch on my old S2 went, the car would lurch when lifting on/off the throttle. A bit like if you'd been a bit clumsy with a gear change. Does your car do that? It's one of those things that's relatively easy to get used to, so not always obvious, until you realise what's actually normal.

Cheers,
Bryan

I have always suspected the clutch was gone because it is like that. However, not sure if that’s the whole story here.

The story so far.

The torque tube is jammed solid and the bell housing is cracked. Absolutely no idea how that has happened.

Looks like the only way to get the thing out is to cut it in two!

Anyone know where I can pick up an S2 torque tube?

After a serious amount of hours the car is back up and running.

Torque Tube, clutch and gaiters replaced.

Rusted rear quarters cut out and replaced.

New jobs found to do for autumn are;

Drivers Seat has split on seam again.

Power steering rack is leaking again.

More rust found at end of sill again. This is particularly annoying as it was replaced 2 years ago. Next time will fill with wax.
