Hi Folks,

Whilst I've been slowly working through the jobs on my 944 Turbo I found that the bottom cover for the gas / petrol tank had totally corroded (possibly due to a slight gas leak from the tank to pump hose).

I've found that the main piece of the cover is still available for a reasonable price from Porsche BUT the inspection hatch / cover that sits over the fuel pump on the wheel side is NLA.

So looks like I have 2 options -

Locate a good condition used hatch / cover
Fabricate a new hatch / cover

Has anyone else ever tackled this job and what interesting solutions did you come up with?

Cheers

The part you are looking for is listed in PET

944 201 331 00 and it has a price, when bits are NLA they do not normally have a price attached, even so its £85.52

the little cover, 951 201 025 00, IS NLA

Item 16 is the bigger cover, 17 is NLA

Yes sorry I wasn't clear the small inspection cover is what I am asking about, it is an odd shape as it conforms to the base of the petrol tank to create a seal so not sure on how easy it would be to fabricate one.

This must be an issue for a lot of 944 / 968 owners on this side of the hemisphere, surprised that there isn't a third party making a solution.

The retaining strap is available as an after market item from Design 911 - bit pricey though at £90...

Short or long strap

I think Porsche are taking the P155

The short strap is £290.87
The long strap is £271.84

That is just a joke.

but there is a complete cover on the bay of fleas, looks in good condition too

Yes - I spoke to Steve at Douglas Valley as he was breaking a 944S2 and he put that up on the bay for me but didn't include the strap that we'd agreed the price on.

Considering I can get the big piece brand new from Porsche for £75, the £57 (inc postage) for a used one of sketchy condition is a bit of a risk... especially as I would want to get it stripped and powder coated.

The strip is £95 from design911 for an aftermarket reproduction, I guess you could also make one from some sheet steel / aluminium as there are some simple bends and then a couple of holes to drill at either end...

When mine went on my 87 car I remade the strip using the ends & mad a middle using aluminium strip from B & Q riveted on.
My covers weren't too bad but I would make a replacement in GRP of I needed one. Use the old one built up with foam as a mould.

Hi Folks,

Jim's comment got me thinking and after I'd sourced a good used cradle from Steve at Douglas Valley and got it powdercoated (no strap unfortunately) I decided to try my hand at metal fabrication (something I hadn't done since high school).

Strip of aluminimum was ordered and I salvaged a piece from the existing strap, rivetted it together and painted it. Did a test fit before I painted and it is a little tight so hoping I have no fitting issues when I finally get the bits I need to re-plumb my fuel pump (another nightmare).

Thanks!
