Post subject:  Kids In The Back of a 24/44/68 - And the law?

Meant to post this ages ago for thoughts. I have a 6 year old and a 3 year old, both average size and have done many short trips, school run etc. (5 mins) with them in the back. I am not using child seats. I'd say the 6 year old is sitting well supported and would argue with plod if push came to shove. 3 year old fine when she sits back but think I'm pushing it with her. I have 3 point belts which fit around both perfectly well, not too close to neck or anything.

What would you chaps think/advise? My Mrs says it's not a great idea, but I generally ignore most of her pearls of wisdom! :D

The law is pretty clear here and not open to personal interpretation.

Child seats are useless for 5-6++yr olds the back of a 24/44/68. Too little room. Current law does not take in to account the old car sizing, seat shapes and 2+2 ergonomics.

I had a stand up row with a Policeman for not having my 6 and 12yr olds in seatbelts in my 1979/80 924T. No belts were ever fitted in the car from new but he would not accept it. I eventually got moved on and was threatened if my car was seen with kids in the back without seatbelts again I would be going to court.

Front seat only accepts booster. Full kids seat is too unstable for safe use. Will probably end up getting into issues with this. The rear is again unusable for kids due to roll cage.

Children must normally use a child car seat until they’re 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first.

Open to interpretation when 'normally' is used......? A 24/44/68 is not a 'normal' sized car, the rear seat is definitely not 'normal'?

Remember, a man who represents himself in court has a fool for a client.

No expert, but I would say the safest approach would be to have the 6 year old in a booster in the back and the 3 year old in a car seat in the front.

Good luck getting 6 year old agreeing.

I would have thought FBHVC or local Traffic Police would be able to advise correct answer.

I think you have 2 different situations here. The posters with late model 944's have obligatory seat belts in the rear, a 924/44/68 (before 1988) does not.

The comments concerning the law above are correct for the 944, but for cars without seat belts there is the following :-

Obviously common sense and child safety should rule.

You beat me to it. I was going to say that my 944 has no belts in the rear so no way to fit a seat anyway. Most of the legal links assume that the car is new and has belts fitted as there are not many 30+ year old cars being used routinely to carry kids

I had the same issues when I first got my 924.

Fitted some 3 point static belts but couldn't find booster seats that would work as any that fitted lifted the kids up way to high. To get round the problem I bought 2 cheap booster seats, removed the covers and fitted cushions into them. When put back into the car they lifted the kids an inch or so, looked like booster seats but moulded to rear seat shape.

5 years later I have the opposite problem and the kids hardly fit in the back!!

We used two of these BubbleBums (blow up booster seats). Our eldest (8) now does not need the booster but our 5 year old does. From memory it's all about where the seatbelt crosses over their chest.
