Hello folks,

Is anybody on here running Bilstein B6 inserts with 968 CS Springs? I'm having a nightmare getting this set up to work, from a number of fronts. First of all the conversion of the front struts. On the offside i'm getting a lot of movement of shock in the strut. What i'm not sure is if this is the strut in the shock or the piston in the shock. Have a look at this... https://youtu.be/rEPe0ZAl1X8 This is while the car is on a ramp, so at full extension. But when on the ground shaking the wheel hard will replicate the click. There is also some play on the nearside, but is some play normal?

Second is the springs, when the struts are built up the springs are not under enough tension. So they twang on sharp bumps and generally clatter about. I know the springs are physically shorter, but i'm sure folk have used them on standard 944 s2 shocks without issue. So why am I having issues on these converted struts?

This is driving me mad now and I'd really like to get it sorted, so any help / advise would be appreciated.

Thanks, Andrew.

something is not right there at all,
from what I have seen the B6 in the strut body are very solid normally

Yes indeed. I'm now thinking the inserts could be shifting in the tube and that's what i'm hearing, not the springs.

I am sure I asked if the Tubes were cut to the right length and the collars welded in, in the correct position,

that is the first place to check, and I have seen some 250k mile sachs units with no oil left in them not wobble that much

That's the thing, I cannot check that exactly, having not done it myself. I'll pull the unit at the weekend and see what I can see on the bench.

Was the plastic spacer fitted into the strut casing? Check out irina's excellent tutorial on youtube.

I have recently carried out the B6 conversion and it looks like you have quite a lot of thread showing below the locking collar. I am thinking that the amount of movement you have is perhaps due to it not being tightened down fully and/or that the plastic spacer has not been installed. In either case, it would allow the insert to move in the strut body. It should be tightened up to 130Nm.

I take it the plastic spacer slides down the strut as the insert is pushed in. So it locates the insert at the bottom of the strut?

So what locates the insert at the base?

Having the nut at the top holding the insert jammed in the well at the bottom of the strut, 96ft/lbs is pretty tight when its all in the right place

I have a spare pair of struts with the adaptor sleeves already welded in. I will measure them tomorrow when I’m in the garage and post up so you have something to compare to if you do get to take them out at the weekend.
My built up struts are not yet in the car so I could give you an overall length measurement for comparison. That said, you have the 968 springs fitted whereas I have the stock S2 units so this will not be of any use :(

spring length should not matter, the built up leg with damper in place should be the same length regardless of springs,

and we are only talking 20mm, 3/4 of an inch, that should not make a huge difference, only to the spring tension in the fully assembled unit.

the standard units only come in one length, (unless it M030)

The guy I referred to on Youtube adds a small amount of ATF into the strut housing to help with heat transfer. Not something I'd heard of before, but theoretically worthwhile.
