I have a 1991 944S2. The engine was already really tappety after the 2018 Le Mans run. A while ago I heard something break or snap as I went through 6000 rpm whilst accelerating. The tappety noise went worse. Sent the car to Stewart. The noisy tappety engine is now nice and quiet after having had a new set of hydraulic tappets fitted. However there is a very annoying ticking sound at tick over, which comes and goes and can be silenced by increasing the revs very slightly. The thinking is it could be the inner one of one of the dual valve springs that has snapped and is causing the ticking. Has anybody heard of this before? Any advice welcome.

Heard of a fair few broken valve springs over the years on 16V lumps so that would be my thought.

The injectors do make a racket. Give it a rev. If the ticking goes away when you snap the throttle shut, and the engine is decelerating with the injectors shut off, then returns when it returns to idle and they start working again, that's your noise.

It was a broken valve spring. All 16 pairs have now been replaced.

Unfortunately the ticking is still there. Had new tappets fitted but still noisy. Further investigation showed that all tappets were solid (as they should be when full of oil) except the rear most 2 which are 'bouncy'.

Think the problem is to do with oil feed, and maybe oil pressure relief valve failing.

Any ideas please?
