After two bad previous experiences (an OPC and an indie) with belt changes on my early 944, I have decided to tackle it myself this time. I've changed cambelts on other cars, just never on my 944.

Is there anyone in the Southwest who has the flywheel lock and 9201 type tool that I could either borrow, or would be happy to come and lend a hand. In return I can offer payment in bacon rolls and jaffa cakes :D :D
I'm not in any great rush as there are a few other jobs that need doing as well.

Thanks

IIRC the flywheel lock tool isn't that expensive from Porsche (£50?). Chances are you'll need it again if you redo the belts at some point, or want to check crank pulley tightness.

With minimal fiddling I managed to get a universal lock to work pretty well, which might be of interest if you work on other cars. Think I used this one:
https://m.sitebox.ltd.uk/draper-expert- ... DYQ0R7Lc0M
With a couple of extra bolts / washers to get it to fit.

Many people don't bother with the 9201 type tool as it's apparently very fiddly to use. I think even Clarke reported he'd stopped using his after a while. I'll see if I can find the link. I There are other methods of tensioning, which if you search forums aren't rocket science.

Here's a link to a thread regarding the P9201 tool which may be of interest:
http://clarks-garage.com/phpBB2/viewtop ... eaf6c67c28

There's lots of reading out there if you search, for example:

Good luck

Thanks for the info.
I didn't realise that Porsche still supplied the flywheel lock tool. I don't mind fiddling with the 9201 tool, as the alternatives don't look to be as accurate. I know Arnworx do them, but the delivery and tax looks at bit harsh, so just seeing if theres a chance of a cheeky borrow first.

Link to the Draper locking tool says it's discontinued. RIP Fletch, a very clever guy with 944s.

I have done a few 944 belts. The flywheel lock is essential but he various belt tools are a PITA especially on later cars. The best I found was the Krikit which is 30 quid or so. Much easier to use than say the sensors tool. Once you get a feel for it you probably won't use it.

By chance, I went past JMG today, so called in and spoke to them about a tension tool. They actually sell the Gates Krikit, so I bought one. A bargain at £17.95 with my TIPEC discount :D

After a bit of searching I have also found a kit containing the flywheel lock tool, a thin cranked 27mm spanner for the tensioner and a balance shaft locking tool. All on their way from Germany.

Does anyone have any recommendation on where to get belts, tensioners and water pump from?

Thanks.

Gates belts from wherever, use the INA numbers and search on car parts for less, you can sometimes get quite a deal

My water pump came from Euro Car parts 3 years ago and has done nearly 10k Miles now and cost £68, it was a circoli brand

Not sure if you can still get them

Ok thanks. £68 for a pump was a good price - most have been around £200+ up to £499 for an OPC exchange one

Are INA the tensioners and rollers?

You can get belt & roller kits from Frazerpart here....

https://www.frazerpart.com/acatalog/944 ... ngine.html

I did and I would recommend them.

All the tensioners and rollers are made by INA, no matter what box they are in,

with the discount codes on CP4Less you can normally get then cheaper than anywhere else,

This Might Help

I have a few unused tensioners & idlers here, all new but not a full kit. These will be for a late 8V 1987

I'm a bit puzzled by this, I didn't use one when I did my belts and tensioners?
