Hi all, I have a small problem with my heater. On my 89 944 non A/C, in the cold position it blows warm air, in the hot position it blows hot air, this tells me that the heater connecting rod is still attached but I can’t seem to get cold air into the car, could someone kindly point me in the right direction please ? Cheers Tony

Hi Tony

This would normally indicate that the little rod accessible with the glovebox removed has snapped. However it could literally be anything in the HVAC system. I would check the linkage rod first, its only a couple of pounds from Porsche.

Thanks for the reply Stuart, surely if the rod had come adrift I wouldn’t get any fluctuations in temperature though ??

Ah right you are getting warm air on cold and hot air on hot. That's more likely a vacuum issue in the system then. My S2 cab done that, the rod was also broken, but fixing it made no difference. I would check all your vac lines and hoses and vac devices next. You probably have worn thermistors also, as everybody does! 3 of those in your system. Usually you can tell if your hot air backs off, whilst the dial is still full hot. And if you press demist it goes full hot again.

Incidentally I never got that issue sorted before I sold the cab.

I had similar symptoms. The plastic clip which everyone mentions was present and was connected to the control rod (accessible through the glovebox) but it was sufficiently broken to only partially grip the rod. It would move towards the cold position but would slip so I generally had warmish air in all control positions.

Hope that helps

RS components stock them. Probably need to buy 10 but they are buttons. I don't have the part number to hand. Some kind soul will put it up.

In the car the thermisters are one on the little fan housing at the end of that rubber tube next to the cig lighter, one in the center vent need to pull the instrument binacle to get at it and the easy one if under the bonnet next to the air intake ( not servicable). You can test them at the ccu plug with a multimeter. I had a dud one behind the center vent, a tricky soldering job.
Following that the heater started doing funny things on iis own, warm then cold for no reason. Would you believe it a bad earth strap.
There is some info on Clark,s and test figures in the manual and on Rennlist. Waylander is your man for best info. The water valve can sometimes fail and vac connections as said need checking.

There are 3

Under the bonnet by the wiper end air intake for the heater
In the central mixing chamber for the cabin vents
In the end of the cabin air sampler, that’s the fan at the end of the tube connected to the vent by the ciggy lighter
