Hi all!

So far this site has been a great resource in helping me diagnose issues with my new 944, so thanks to you all for that.

The biggest issue I have found to date is the lurching of the vehicle when you try to get on or off the power below 2500 rpm. It seems from my research this is the clutch. So an expensive start to ownership for me, I think.

What do you think?

Also I can find nothing about when it was last done from the docs that came with the car and it currently has 181k mls on the clock.

I have found a sachs clutch kit for 450 would that be a good price?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

Welcome to the forum. Don’t forget to post some pics of the car.

From your description it sounds like the rubber centre of your clutch plate may be failing. This is quite a common failure. There is an inspection hole on the passenger side of the bell housing (under the car) which may allow you to see something.

The price on the clutch kit doesn’t sound too bad but it’s worth shopping around as you can pick up real bargains but it sounds like you may not have the luxury of time to wait for a great deal.

As you will know by now, a clutch change on a 944 is not a quick job, but if you decide to do it yourself it will certainly allow you to get very familiar with the car and that will be a good thing in the long run.

Good luck with it and keep us posted with progress

Matt

Hi Mark,

£450 is about right for the clutch kit. There are a few other bits you may want to do whilst in there.

I did mine last year and this is what I paid and where the parts came from.....

£450 Clutch kit (Sachs) Design 911

And whilst we were in there...
£54 Fork shaft OPC
£17 Fork bearings OPC
£50 Guide tube OPC
£22 Spiggot Bearing (the one in the centre of the flywheel) OPC
£12 Torque tube Clamp bolts OPC
£110 Crank sensor Design 911
£96 O2 sensor Design 911
£19 Exhaust gaskets OPC

Best part of £800 all in.

I then paid for 11 hrs of labour, which people seem to think was a bit on the high side but it included freeing some seized gbox mounting bolts, and the gbox filler plug, retapping the O2 sensor fitting plus a few other small jobs so was more than reasonable from my point of view.

I had to replace the clutch when I bought my 944. In addition, I replaced the rear main seal, clutch guide tube, fork bearings and spigot bearing. My original forum topic is here viewtopic.php?f=25&t=12732&start=30 which details why it's worth doing these at the same time.

If you plan to keep the car, it's a job worth doing as at some point it'll need to be done, so why not do it early and enjoy the benefits.

If you're not planning to do the work yourself, find someone who knows what they're doing as I coughed up for 16 hours' labour, which I suspect (in hindsight) was because they were learning as they went along.

Cheers,
Bryan

Thanks Bryan,
It was your post I read and noted down all those parts you mentioned, that's what will get done I think.

As for the labour, I'll learn from you experience.

I had a boxster in the past with an electrical fault where the interior had to be remove to fix... So I hear ya :)

I keep seeing ads on facebook for Woolies offering of refurbed clutch plates for £165

As that then leaves you needing to source the spring plate and thrust bearing (and probably other bits that slip my mind) I don't know where it leaves you cost wise compared to a sachs kit, but thought it was worth a mention.

Did you get anywhere with this? I've been in denial about my clutch but have just accepted I need to do it! Ordered a sachs clutch kit today (£450 with 10% discount code on eBay)

Now need to get new quotes for all the bits IanK mentioned, and the rear main seal. Thanks for the parts lists and links guys.

Hi

I spent the last 2 weeks doing the clutch on mine (1982 924 so some differences but the heavy bits are mostly the same) and did the complete job on the garage floor by myself. I went for gearbox out, torque tube slid back then remove the bell housing and doing an hour each evening had the job done in under 13 hours but if I had to do it again I'd seriously think about just lifting the engine out instead.

If you have a good set of tools, competent with the spanners and can write off a weekend or 2 weeks without the car its not to bad a job for DIY. For me the saving in labour was worth the learning experience and occasional bit of swearing.

Rough diary of progress here: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1006375

Now back on the road the clutch is lovely and makes a huge difference to how it drives.

Good luck
