Is this the oil fed gauge or the electric one?

when my car is hot if the revs drop between gear changes then the oil needle moves in unison, I have been out for a thrash in the 968 today and sort of watched the needle, it goes down to 2.5-3 bar at idle, 4.5 bar at 4000 rpm, and up and down in normal driving never below 3 and never above 5, my engine is totally original 154K miles

exactly where were the metal fillings and how did they get on the tray underneath?

lectric gauge. im and experience engineer and familiar with oil pressure readings which would be expected. what im refereeing to is far from the ordinary liner reduction in pressure. at no point in this thread have I been worried about low oil pressure or that pressure changes ununiformly with rev range. just a few points to clarify what the issue is.

normal driving so not foot to the floor, off the throttle, clutch depressed, change gear, clutch released, back on throttle, engine nice and warm, 30 miles covered. the oil pressure needle will fly all over the scale anywhere from 0-5 almost as if someone has waved a magnet passed it. as soon as the gear change is complete and im driving again the needle returns to its steady state.

im not 100% certain i put a clean drip day under. but its highly likely it was clean before use. it was under thr pressure sender port while i put my test gague in and the oprv when i changed that. having only just cleaned the sump ouuut put fresh oil in and done 20 miles it was quite a surprise to see that.

i think ill tear it to bits this winter, im dancing round the edges here.

Just a question, can you have the oil fed and the electric running at the same time?

I would be more inclined to believe the analogue rather than electronic

They're both reading the same, ref the videos posted previously

Just a thought as both analogue and electronic readings are the same ruling out some other failings.
My two pence worth would be along the lines of a engine producing slight harmonic vibration at the rev range when the gauge shows the variation.
This effect on a cracked oil pickup pipe etc letting a little air into the oil way may just cause some slight cavitaion at that specific rev range.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter where in the rev range it is, the flutter remains. I checked the pick up pipe while I had the sump off and it was crack free.

I think its must more fundamental than that, Main bearings or oil pump, we will know in 4 or 5 months time :D

Continuing to update this. I covered 275 miles at the weekend and it started with the usual needle flutter when warm. But driving back from Silverstone on Sunday night the needle hardly moved. cursing along at 70 it was holding a pretty steady 4bar, occasional rising to 4.5 but settling back to 4. It still a bit whacky between gears. But while under load it seems to be holding steadier. So I will continue to monitor and live with it.

Will keep you posted and get the answer in the end!

I've nothing to add, but appreciating the updates. Good luck getting to the bottom of it!

Cheers, It may take some time, but I will close this off for future reference

So I have a theory. Ive done about 30 miles today and noticed much more stable oil pressure. though it does still flutter at low RPM. The big take away is the needle goes wild between gears. I think this could be a sign of excessive end float? Pressing the clutch pedal is also pushing the crank forward, enough to upset the pump drive of oil flow in the main bearings?

Thats the best I can do with out taking bit off, which aint happening!

Never heard of this on a 944 but does sound possible I suppose. You've been through all the usual suspects, which usually just result in low pressure, not fluctuating pressure.
FWIW I had a 10bar gauge fitted to my S2 after a stuck OPRV incident & cold pressures above idle were 7'ish IIRC.

Good luck!

Well this remains undiagnosed but I have used the car a few times and its given no issues or horrible noises, Just the usual flickery needle.

Anyway for those who are not averss to a different German marque, here is a link to why the 944 is left as it is.

Cheers, its certainly wiped me out this year! I can see the faintest light at the end of a tunnel, though that might be an on coming train
