that might need a rebuild and a new rectifier

One thought on your strangely intermittent connection issue with the speed and reference sensors. As you have tested the continuity of the screen and the two sensor wires which checked out as "good" and you mention that you can't replicate the intermittent connection when testing this continuity, could it be that the intermittent connection is between the two halves of the connector? i.e. that the male and female parts of the connector are causing the intermittent connection? Are you still able to replicate the poor connection when the connector is together? If the wiring itself is good I would say that makes the whole topic much easier to handle and the changing of the connector may fix the issue.

Just a thought.

Matt.

Thanks Matt...yes I had thought that may be an issue...and having searched the web I would not be alone in this.. they are definately not so 'positive click' if you know what I mean. Maybe a few cable ties would help this.
Still awaiting a few parts in the post so I can begin testing again next week.

Cheers,

M

So...my "B" reference sensor is definitley intermittent. I need to unclip it/bend wires to get it started/tach bounce every now and then. I feel that I will change the sensor first, as I have a spare, before I try and splice in new cable.

The question is though, once started I then pulled the B reference sensors apart and the car still ran....is this normal?

Thanks,

M

Ok...so its been a few days since my last post.....

I have managed to get the instrument panel battery light up and working now and this has definately made things better. It can now pull towards 5000 rpm There was no earth strap on my alternator just the exciter small blue wire and the heavier gauge one to the starter. Would this make a massive difference?

However, it is still pretty pedestrian......I have checked and changed the reference sensor twice now...but as I have nothing to compare it to I don't know if this is good or not. It all checks out as per Clarks....but it is definately not right.

For the moment the car runs and gets to speed eventually which around these parts is generally an earth shattering 80kph......

I fear I may have to visit a local Porsche mechanic as I seem to have exhausted all sensible possibilities....but open to all possibilities.....

Thanks,

Injectors have been mentioned a few times but I don't think I've seen any tests on them? Might have missed it though!

I inspected them this morning....not bottle tested though.................but hooked each one up to external battery and all sprayed fine. They look pretty old but seem to function fine.

Ok...so here it is.....my 0-60mph time.......don't always rag it but this was basically WOT from standstill up to 60 mph....about 11 seconds!!...3rd gear pulls quite well but first and second seem really strained. It is certainly alot better since I put in the battery dash bulb and can rev it up to around 5300rpm.....but no red line...and I tried......still very slow...according to by power curve diagram 60 mph should be achieved by just going into third.

So...all comments welcome!

Thanks,

Michael

Interesting................I have no cat...and fumes come out.....it does sound v restricted though I agree.

What would block it?! And what section to unbolt? Any other way to test it?

The baffles in the boxes can break up and fold in on themselves

Take the back box off first and try it

Sorry if this has been said before, but have you checked your sensors are gapped correctly?/

Have gapped speed sensor..DG....at 0.8mm with washer. Of course it may be faulty....that or the DME.

IMO this is a classic fuelling prob.
Check fuel flow and continuous delivery rate under pump pressure.
Has a new fuel filter been fitted, water ingress from a fuel filler cap can have failings.
