Post subject:  944 s2 knocking under deceleration

I have posted a similar post before it still no joy, I have taken it to a general garage who admit there is a knock but can’t identify it and a Porsche specialist who has indicated he thinks it’s the Polly bushes in the control arms knocking. I don’t really fancy changing the control arm bushes again so has anyone got any ideas

Checked Anti Roll bar
Suspension had no play in the top joint
Wheel bearings and bull joints ok
Engine mounts were dismissed by both garage
Power steering pump is ok
Steering shaft was be and no play in ujs

The noise seems to be front off centre nearer to the near side and it’s a clunking.

Thanks
Adam

Have you checked the exhaust mounts?

Having poly bushed a couple of these and other cars, I doubt it's those as they are normally a very tight fit. Plus, I think you would feel this through the steering. Have you removed the front struts or replaced the front dampers? Could be top mounts or the damper retaining nut not tight enough.

It could be something else lose that only hits another component or the body under deceleration. Might be worth wiggling and pry baring anything in the vicinity of where you think the noise is coming from e.g. the horns, the radiator, the airbox ect see if anything is lose and can contact something else. The only other things I can think of are the power steering pump (although drivers side), or the transaxle mount which is obviously rear but might transmit noise forward via the torque tube.

Not checked the exhaust mounts but they have not been moved and before I pollybushed there wasn’t a noise.

I have had the struts off in order to remove the control arm but can’t remeber if I removed them entirely of just the bottom mounting. Not had a need to touch the dampers so suspect they are ok. Is there a check for top mounts or damper nuts?

To list what I did.... Polly bushes front end, antiroll bars, control arm, 968 rear control arm mountings, brake refurb, new disks and pads, new brake lines, new steering column, 2nd hand power steering pump, rear shocks new horns. Think that’s the lot!

Finally this is fixed - lose bolt on the front cross member!

That took a long time to fix

Glad you found the issue - hopefully there wasn't any other damage? Might not have done the exhaust anygood if the engine was able to rock back and forth (which sounds like the cause of your clunking).

think the suspension anchor points all being loose would worry me more, the next question is who left it undone?

I think the clue may be in the above posts...

I don’t see in all the above where you would need to remove the crossmember bolts?

Sorry I was guessing that maybe something wasn't right with either the cross member of control arms as he said that he had replaced the control arms and some other suspension parts, maybe he meant by "crossmember bolt" the bolt that goes through the control arm to secure it to the crossmember? I think you would have noticed a loose crossmember bolt if you were changing the control arms?

Yup a bit of confusion in there not that it matters much it’s fixed

Hopefully to clear up the confusion - I thought it was a cross member but maybe its called something different, in order to change the steering column you need lower the steering rack by undoing the metal bar that runs from one side to the other. I must have not tightened these up properly on one side.

And yes - it has taken an age to sort. As two garages said everything was ok I have not bothered to look, I had my first track day so I though I would check every bolt and found the loose ones.
