Does anyone know if there a needle bearing on the Lower section within the engine compartment...I know there is one in the upper steering column. I appear to have some play in the steering column where it connects to the steering UJ shaft - which I have recently replaced.
Thanks

there is a needle sleeve 477 419 059 £104.93 and a needle bearing 113 415 511 £49.80

I would take a bet that if you strip down the entire coloum the bearing is a standard size that you can get from anywhere for about £10

There is one in the bulkhead if that is what you mean? I replaced mine last year and it made a massive difference.

Visible from inside, just below the clutch master cylinder, steering column removed:

And from the engine bay. Blurry thing at the bottom is the UJ from the steering shaft.

And the replacement:

It was easy enough to replace. Bit of effort to punch the old one out as the rubber is quite soft and it was a bit stuck in the bulkhead, but new one pushed straight in. I gave the area around it a good clean up while I was there as it was pretty grim.

The surface on my steering column that sits in the needle bearing was also quite pitted. It's probably a bad idea, but I used a hard epoxy (JB Weld) to smooth the shaft, then sanded it back. It's a relatively low load surface so I thought I'd try that. I think the proper repair would be remove the old metal sleeve and press a new one on, but I didn't have the equipment for that!

blimey, has that been under water???

but I would suggest that that bearing is a standard one, that can be bought from anywhere, all you need is the dimensions or the bearing number

It looked like it had... I suspect it was helped along by a leaky master cylinder while the car was sitting before I had it.

When I ordered the sleeve from OPC it came with the bearing - didn't need the two separate parts.

That's good news, sometimes PET is not to clear what comes with what bits

Have you binned the old one, might be fun to try and get the numbers off the bearing

and I cannot see a separate collar/surface for the bearing to run on, I think it might be the inner shaft complete £366.00

Pretty sure I binned the old one I'm afraid. I hoard too many old bits but I figured that bearing was rusted beyond all use!

At that price I think I'd try the epoxy repair again
