Hi,

I am having too renew my disks and pads due to the fronts being warped, so decided to do front and rears.

Done the drivers front, no problems. Moved on to the drivers rear and cannot get the inner break pad to fit, it just wont go in!!

Also, when I ordered the kit, the back pads are different from the front, but when I pulled the original pads out of the rear, they are the same as the fronts, should this be the case?

Yep totally the wrong pads. Std S2s use same pad front and rear. M030 use a different pad front (same as 993) and std (s2) rear. Not Eurocarparts by chance? Had that myself once.

Is it a mistake with the reg number identification?

I just looked up pads for S2 on ECP, and it specifically states “front or rear”. There are no separate rear pads listed, at least for a 1990 S2 I selected to generate pad listing.

I called them up and told them their website is wrong. Said the rears and fronts are the same.

He said they don’t have them listed for the rears!! Ok just let me exchange the wrong rears for some fronts instead, oh yes we can do that!! Head smack!!!

I have done 4-5 sets of brembo’s now and I got all my genuine brembo spares from
Mode Performance http://modeperformance.co.uk

Worked out about £120 per axle without pistons

Maybe they corrected it after your call, but today the website is correct and says front and rear pads are same. The site also shows the front pads specific to MO30 option.

I’ve made very similar mistakes ordering stuff from ECP, and it’s been my mistake not theirs. If you look at the tab marked ‘fitment detail’ for the MO30 pads, it has a reference for the specific disc using their part number, and a warning before the page that there are different pads depending on model/option.

GSF tends to give a lot more fitting detail so make it easier to avoid this mistake, but I use ECP more often as they have so many flash sales, and delivery is very efficient. Both are great at handling returns! Glad you got it sorted.

On a separate note, your photo of rear caliper shows quite serious plate lift at the back of inner side. This is why the pad won’t fit. Was the old pad difficult to remove on that side?

I must read he small print more often lol.

Yes pads very difficult to get out. I’m going to leave this side and check the others.

If the other rear is same I will get them rebuilt

In another note, found no shims in the front right - this ok?

Do you mean the adhesive dampers between pad backing plate and piston?

If so then it's OK to leave them out, but in their place you should use high temp copper grease to reduce brake squeal — just a smear where the pad backing contacts pistons (and at the sliding points at the end), but be careful not to get grease on friction material or disc. This set up won't perform quite as well as original dampers, but very close to it.

But if you're suffering plate lift then dampers are pretty superfluous anyway. They're meant to help the pad withdraw smartly from disc, without any vibration. If the plates are distorted then the pads will be hanging up anyway, and reducing braking performance. When you get your callipers referred the difference in braking performance and feel is fantastic. Brembo 4-pots create a very powerful system, but the aluminium caliper/steel plate combination is bound to cause corrosion which undermines this after so many years. When you have them refurbed - or if doing them yourself - make sure to put a little anti-corrosion grease on the surface they sit on before screwing plates back into caliber body.
