Hello,

Does anyone here have an auto or experience of a 944 auto? I've been driving passed a very beaten up 944 at a local garage and finally stopped to have a nose the other day, its an oval dash 2.5 auto but the colour and interior is lovely... crystal green metallic with a brown pinstripe interior :bounce:

Before I approach the garage I wanted to know if the auto boxes are troublesome and what parts are like. I know its not going to be the involved drive that a manual is but I'm beginning to feel like saving it.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

The main issue with these was the drive plate (situated where the clutch lives on a manual) This has a rubber centre that can disintegrate, and replacements cost as much as a house in Sussex. If it's making funny noises from this area, run away.

The box is generic Audi auto of the period, aside from the drive plate detailed above it is nothing special. So easily fiaxable by any good auto specialist. They'll benefit from a fluid & filter change.
One thing is, it is an old style 3 speed Auto so will blunt the performance quite a bit. Unless you need an auto a 5 speeder would be a better bet.

Thanks for the info,

Going to have a poke around it this weekend, I'll let you know how it is.

I've had a manual 2.7 for the last 12 years so was curious about the auto.

I've had a 2.5 auto and a 27 auto. They used Borg Warner 3 speed boxes. I never had any issues with them - but they were all new cars at the time. I find that people who try autos out always say manuals are bettert/quicker - usually becaause they haven't driven an auto long enough and found how to get the best use from it. No way is a Porsche auto slow on acceleration

You need to keep the fluid topped up or it can lag on changing gear. There is a place in Leatherhead that rebuild auto gearboxes

I like autos, but in your case I think I would keep the 2.7 if it's going ok. They're a bit on the rare side now..

Sorry for the delay,

Thanks for the info everyone. Having had a good look around, the body is in really good condition, no rust in the usual places but the interior is a different story and the engine is out. Really lovely colour combination but too much work for me to take on. Makes me appreciate the condition mine is in :)
