Hi, I have just had a quick fit MOT who diagnosed a wheel bearing (offside front) has play. They also advised it can be tightened. This seems to coincide with knocking that I am getting from the same corner generally under breaking and pulling away.

I have tightened the bearing to the correct tension, based on previous forums & Clarks Garage but there is still slight play in the wheel. I haven't compare this to the near side yet, that's this evenings job. Does it seem logical that the bearing needs replacing? also the knocking is still present. The only way to describe the knocking is its like driving with loose wheel nuts, once moving it seems to be fine.

The next question is I'm a relatively competent DIY mechanic is the wheel bearing a home Job - from various forums it seems like it can be done at home but also sounds like removing the bearing and refitting is a pain without a press?

Thanks,
Adam

I took it into the garage who put it on a ramp with some wobbly plates thing that shakes it side to side. There is some very slight play in the wheel bearing but nothing to worry about, the ball joint also has very slight play on that side, however neither are likely to be the culprit.

The noise is mostly present steering at low speeds - ie into a parking space or drive but also when breaking into a junction. It does feel like its coming from the steering, but the garage said there is no play in the system. and you can feel it in the steering wheel.

could be the common broken anti roll bar mounts,

if the wheel is knocking when pulled form the top, and you are sure that the bearing is the correct tightness, then the strut could be flexing in the middle, they have a habit of doing that, even my almost brand new Porsche ones do it.

Thanks, Ill take a look tonight, are you referring to the two middle mountings rather than those under the control arm? Im sure we would have seen the outer ones if they were broken.

Ran out of tome tonight, further symptom identified. If i dry steer turning the wheel clockwise its cluncky anti clockwise not so bad. Plan to get it on ramps next week and take the engine trim panel off, shoild het more visibilty of whats going on. Could it be the steeribg rack?

Check your engine mounts.
I had a mystery knock under braking and when turning right whilst erm, pressing on! It turned out the drivers side mount was shot. When this fails, the manifold gets even closer to the steering linkage, hence the knock.

Thanks ill check this at the same time. The only difference is that my knocking seems to be at low speeds, rather than hight speed. Infact it doesn't knock at all above 30. Also mine is also apparent dry steering so suspect this wouldnt be an engine mount. That said im not ruminv iut anything yet.

Sorry didn’t make it clear that I was getting the knock/clunk at low speed too. Much more noticeable when turning right / clockwise.

So the anti roll bar seems to be secure with no obvious breaks in the brackects and is there an easy way to check the engine mounts, certainly no movement in the engine when I try to rock it.

I had a similar type of knock (from the front) although more under acceleration and braking. Turned out to be the power steering pump was not mounted correctly, the housing had cracked and the rear bush that supports the bolt was missing. I believe this is not uncommon so might be worth a look / feel.

I’m not sure it’s the power steering pump, all seems ok with that. Still not any clearer. Anyone experienced clunking from the rack itself? Going to get some low rise ramps so I can get under it with wheels under weight.
