Whilst I had the cam cover was off for a refurb, I thought Id take a look at the condition of the slipper.

As you can see, it was brown and slightly worn but there isnt really much evidence that its on the way out (groove depth no more than 1mm or so).

is this in good or poor condition - any comments on when this should be replaced?

The pics show the pad after I'd unloaded it and lifted the chain so I could see the condition of the pad face.

You've done half the work already. Replace it now and forget about it for another 20+ years.

Ive just had my OPC confirm that pad is only £7.54 + VAT and is in stock in the UK so its a no brainer. I see there is another pad on the underside so Im just checking a cost for this one.

Ive seen a kit available from a couple of the 3rd party parts suppliers for £75-80 + VAT that includes poth pads and 2 screws. Does that mean the other pad is £70

https://www.partworks.de/partworks-de/P ... 28-S4.html

42 euros, but remember you have to remove the complete tensioner and you will need new J tube washers

4 of 900 123 050 30

the J tube has been updated quite a few times 944 105 167 07 due to cracking now £86.21

there are numerous posts stating that the whole tensioner should be replaced at 100k, 944 105 049 01 £377.21 inc Vat

Yes, I seem to remember paying similar when I did mine, with the bottom costing considerably more than the top.

You'll also need a new cam cover gasket, but that fact you've got this far tells me you already know this.

If you decide to get the cover repainted / powder coated while it's off, remember it contains magnesium, so don't get it acid stripped.

Cheers,
Bryan

Thanks Guys,

the bottom slipper is NLA so its the top one for £7 or both for £74 - but you do get the 2 screws for that!

Ive also orderd new banjo washers and o-rings/caps for the cam cover.

Should be back together this weekend!.
