what the hell is this line? and how important is is, as it was swinging in the breeze before I stuffed it back on to the black plastic hose

The braided line in the picture that disappears up the side of the fuel tank ?? following it under the car to the front it looks like part of the vacuum setup including the canister behind the passenger wing

That's the charcoal canister. Think it's to do with fuel tank venting.

Thought the cannister was in the front wing? The picture looks more like the rear shock absorber...

I would say fuel vent to charcoal canister too, IIRC it runs down the driver's side under the car, up into the engine compartment and then across the firewall to the passenger wing where it goes through the inner wing to the canister.
