Dear TIPEC members,
(I am new to this so please forgive any board etiquette mistakes).
I am looking for an alternator for my 1986 924s - new ones seem very expensive. Can anyone direct me to a good source for such things.
Thank you in advance for any help.
My best,
Hannah924s

Before getting too worried about new, check out your local auto electrical specialist for a price on reconditioning yours.

Hi SCM924s,
Thank you for your swift reply - didn't know such a thing existed! I'm in central London, do you know of a place I could try in particular?
Thankyou,
Hannah

Sorry, no, I am the other side of the country. Google starter and alternator repairs/reconditioning in your area and see what comes up.

Thank you very much for your help, I have just done that and there seems to be a few, have emailed them. Good to meet another 924 person - I will try not to ask too many questions in the future! Have a good day.

Hi Hannah

If you do a search on eBay you should be able to find a repair kit for your alternator, check the unit itself to see it's model number, you'll find videos on you tube showing how to do this or have a chat with your local auto electrician to see if they will do it for you. Oh, and welcome to the forum and you can never ask too many questions, after all, that's what the forum is for...:)

good luck

Pete

What is the issue you are having. It might be relatively simple / cheaper fix such as the voltage regulator which would be about £30 for the part and about 30mins to swap over.

Hi Prophead,
Thank you for your message. AA man said alternator. For about two weeks I thought battery was maybe dying but even after driving it would lose charge if that makes sense. I just thought I'd get new battery as it was driving okay, if not sometimes a little sluggish after a longer ride out. When AA man came after it ground to a halt in town, he charged the battery and checked it and said battery was okay. We then drove a while to get home and it died again. Lights still worked (not so well etc) but it wouldn't turn over. We charged it again and got home. It starts fine and runs fine and then kind of runs out of steam.... so I can start it at home right now but I couldn't drive it anywhere. He said the alternator wasn't charging it. Sorry, I'm trying to remember everything, I am not au fait with mechanical stuff, just the very rudimentary.

I saw the voltage thing you mention online and hoped it was that as a lot cheaper but after describing everything to my 'Porsche man' he said alternator. He can't do it until Sept. 21, it's stuck with me at home, waiting for a friend to bring something to check the alternator first and go from there. I was just trying to get ahead of the problem by finding out about reconditioned ones or any other angles as a new one is silly money!
Sorry I've written half a telephone book here!

What does the voltmeter read with the engine running Hannah?

Hi Pete,
Thank you for your message. I will start it tomorrow (hopefully it starts) and let you know.
(I live on the top floor 100 stairs away from it, so I can't just pop out - lazy but true!)

Hi Pete,
Hope this finds you well after the weekend. It won't start now. It is on one notch above nothing on the battery meter thing... AA man charged it last and I drove it and it only just made it home. It hasn't been charged since. Would it be bad battery now too? Found a very helpful man in South London at Autotronic. He has an alternator for £200.00 but that still seems so much money......
Think I'll have to just suck it up.

If the alternator isn't charging the battery it will have run down from using the car. You won't be able to check whether it is u/s or start the car until it has been recharged again.

That's what I thought but it did start the other day so was hopeful it would again......
Double annoyance is battery is impossible to get out to recharge and not somewhere safe where I can run charger off (if that makes sense). We tried to take it out with the AA man. So the friend has to come and do that tooooo. He's busy, so I have to wait.... Thank you for messaging.

I can only assume that the battery is difficult to remove because the nut holding the fixing clamp is seized, otherwise it is a simple job. If it is seized give it a good soaking with WD40 or similar to help free it, if it shears off you have no means of securing the battery and that is an MOT fail.
