after waving goodbye to my 83 Lux just over a week ago, ive started a new chapter with an 89 S2. Although most people dont realise ive got a new car, its quite a different beast.

im now making a list of all the things that need doing, including the sills, but one of the most annoying is the rest position of the wipers. When in the park position they sit up at an angle, starting the wiping sweep. the strange thing is, if i put them on intermittent they stop further up the windscreen than if i put them on wipe, then stop them. I cant imagine they have moved on their splines, at least not both of them by the same amount, so am thinking it might be the relay? has anyone else had this issue and resolved it?

Mine do exactly the same and so I just give the wiper switch a little nudge which makes then arms park at the base of the screen.
It seems that the wipers don't go full travel when on constant wipe, so when you turn them off, they sit high on the screen. One quick touch on the switch though gets them to sit lower.
Just something you get used to!

The wiper stopping position is controlled by contacts within the wiper motor itself. These get grimey over time, giving a poor connection and result in wipers stopping in weird places! I haven't done the fronts, but recently did my rear wiper as that was stopping pretty much mid stroke...

Solved the issue nicely. I think the front wiper motor is far more difficult to actually get to though

yep, the wiper motor will generally have two live feeds, one is controlled by the wiper switch itself. The other takes over when the wiper switch is turned off and is permanent but with a gap on the contact shown in the above picture, so when it rotates to the point it will stop. but if the track is corroded or dirty it can stop earlier.

Thanks Guys. getting to the front motors look like fun and games. it will probably be a couple of weeks till i get to it, but will let you know how i get on. In the meantime ive got an appointment with a bodyshop on Saturday to take a look at the sills and wings, im hoping for the unique combination of reasonable price and great quality.

after several attempts my wipers finally rest in the correct place.

i took the motor and gearbox to pieces, cleaned it all up, but no difference. I then tried adjusting the position of the plastic drive gear in the gearbox, but that didnt make any difference either. In the end i used a bit of card bolted to the wiper spindle to help me work it out. What had happened, is the arm that attached to the gearbox via a single nut had shifted relative to the motor. So i undid said nut and moved the mechanism till it was at the far end of its travel, tightened it back up again and hey presto, everything was in the right place.

while i was at it, i sorted out some light surface rust around the wiper holes, and cleared out all the muck from behind the fan. I reused the black caulk that seals the fan, as it was amazingly still very malleable. i rolled it into a very long sausage, before joining the ends together and popping it back in place.

Overall it took ages, but could probably do the the whole lot in an hour now.

Did you replace the bearings in the motor while it was in bits, it makes the so much quieter and only costs about £3

To be honest replacing the bearings didn't even cross my mind, I can't say I've noticed the motor being noisy, must be lucky, or deaf.
