Im hoping somebody on here has done this before?

I have a few simple questions I'd like answering if anybody is able to help...

Can a standard lux box be used or do the ratio's not suit the engine?

Other than engine, loom, ECU, ancillaries are there any other parts I specifically need ?

Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of when doing this conversion?

thanks

Sam

I have a 968 engine in one of my 924S's

In hindsight, I would have saved my cash and at the time I could have purchased a 996 with what it cost.

Before I increased the power plant, I upgraded all suspension and braking systems to cope.

You will need a mix of extras, from memory I viol I have 944S2 bell housing and have kept STD transmission. However my torque tube bearings now need attention but may have done anyway, who can tell.

The later ecu will need some mods on the connections.
I've had issues with fuel rails cracking, so fit new engine and gearbox mounts (two options for gearbox, use the stiffer ones) you will need to have some fuel pipes fabricated to join the old to the new.

Exhaust manifold and downpipe are S2

Also and probably very important, don't even think about fitting and old engine without at least having the head rebuilt. Or it will come back and bite ya.

Unless you're doing it for the challenge, maybe the best option is to sell yours and buy this one

S2 engined oval dash model with Fuchs! - looks rather nice

As nice as that is I have my own project

Tin top shell from a lux which is completely stripped & bare shelled at the moment and in primer as of this weekend

Nut and bolt rebuilt with everything refurbished plated and painted.

Coilovers & brakes to be upgraded and now I have a 3.0 16v
rebuild and fit.

This car is a restomod for me to keep and I wanted to build it rather than buy it
although I appreciate it'll owe me a lot of time and money once built!

Go for it Sam, if your up for the challenge and you know the budget to complete could escalate and many things
you've not thought of will reveal themselves etc...it'll be an interesting journey / project for you.

I've done just that on a 924S, but with a (short stroke) S2 3.0 block and 2.5 head (2707cc) but I've not had to source any 3.0S2 components as it uses all the stock 2.5 ECU/ ignition / fueling / inlet / exhaust / loom etc..

I'm using the original gearbox, fully rebuilt and with a Wavetrac LSD, the gearing is the shorter 3.889 which I like as it's
great for acceleration and only tops 130 ish..

Your not too far away from me, (Wrexham) if you need any help on anything my build is documented here :

Hi mate yours looks a great build!

Would be good to pick your brain on a few things... I used red dragon vapour blast which
I think is by your place?

Interesting on the gearbox front if they are strong enough im tempted to use the standard lux box then especial as this is a B road blaster
top end really doesn't matter!

Yes exactly, TWR is also inside the same courtyard as Dave's vapour blasting (Bersham Enterprise Centre),
Sure, if I can assist I will pop in or give us a call.

Fair enough - makes it easier to start with a bare shell in some ways anyway.. Sounds like a great project.

8v na gearboxes are pretty cheap, so even if you do break one it's not the end of the world. Lower ratios as well so handy I think.
Early boxes had 2 mounts, one on each side. Later boxes just had one at the top.
In the limited experience of cars I've owned & driven, S2 gearboxes are quieter.

Std ECU or aftermarket? 16V ECU's have a different connector, S2 engine loom will be useful. 1
6V engine uses a remote oil cooler rather than just a water /oil heat exchanger on the 8V. This mounts on the os front, down by the power steering fluid cooling pipes.

I have some 16V exhaust manifolds if you need them, may have a few other ancillary bits off my old engine.

I have a standard ecu and im chasing a loom..

Talked to Augment and I could go aftermarket and also remove the AFM.. or there is also a guy local to me which would help with a conversion to megasquirt
and ditch the reference sensors in the progress.

I can get hold of a s2 box for £100 from the same guy I had the engine of so maybe I get it just in case I think I'd always recover the cash.

In terms of Rad and fan do I need? s2? or can i run 2.5 lux and be ok?

also I don't currently have an s2 airbox so im guessing I will need one of those?

PM me the ancillaries you have please

S2 box sounds like a bargain - I'd buy it for that money as a spare for mine

Air box may not be necessary - it goes under the badge panel in an S2 and is often replaced by a cone filter in there. You've got a few options to consider, maybe feeding a cone filter from the wheel arch intake where the 8V cars draw their air from.

I have no idea about rad, sorry. Best to check PET to see if the parts are different

VEMS might be another option for ECU?

I'll have a look at my list of bits for you later
