As the title says....
It gets worse as the car warms up, neutral is very stiff moving the gear stick either way, gears 1 and 2 are nearly impossible to engage.
It's recently had new oil, it's obviously taken all the pleasure out of driving it.

My question is, can anybody recommend a Porsche specialist who's very knowledgeable and reasonably priced in the Surrey / Sussex area ?

Cheers

Just get a used gearbox of ebay if needed , not worth opening it up but check the gear selector linkage on the gearbox first for wear. Couple of hours to swap box over if nothing breaks or is seized any local garage can do .

before taking it to the garage, it could well be the linkage or rather where the selector goes into the side of the gearbox. Its unlikely that the internal selector mechanism within the gearbox should go tight. However the selector rod has to move in out out (sideways) and rotate forward and backward. If its corroded or full of muck it will go stiff.
If you can get under the gearbox try blathering the selector mechanism and around where the selector rod goes into the gearbox with wd40 and work the gearlevel in and out of gears. It could just be corrosion and muck.

could well be the linkage.

I got a new one from Only944.com

Porsche Servcie Centre Brooklands are my choice for the local jobs, they have a guys that's worked on transaxles for years (although he is currently on holiday until mid June.
Tim Munford is your contact there for the Classic cars

944 transaxles are nye indestructible....I note that you said you've put new oil in it...did this problem occur after the oil was changed/...if so I would try changing to another..did you by chance put Swepco in...I tried this in mine and it was terrible, the gearbox was too stiff and in fact showed signs of wear after only being in the box for a few days....ditched the oil and all was fine again.....

Also as mentioned check the linkage, this can give you the same type of symptoms....

Pete

Although this is a 944Online modification, the linkages are much the same - almost...

You will need to remove the L/H/R wheel and with a torch, check the links, while a buddy moves the shift. Engine running, WITH an axle stand positioned. The main shaft, ie from the shift, is on the left of the pic. This is the standard pic-up link (covered by that rubber grommet) - remove and check...
