OK so head off, HG looks fine and no damage to block, or alignment/warping issues - head therefore being sent back to co that rebuilt it a few weeks ago for testing.

So no more news really, Prescott was a hoot in my Octavia VRs though...................

?????????????
how did you get from looking for dodgy sensors / wiring to having to remove the head?

The sysptoms you described previously definitely pointed towards the ecu receiving incorrect information from a dodgy input source. Likely candidates are
1. Cylinder head temperature sensor / associated wiring
2. AFM air flow meter - could be failing track or moisture inside
3. TPS throttle position sensor

Other considerations would be blocked fuel filter and/or failing fuel pump.

Yee ha,

Car back on road Saturday, done 100+ miles so far and (touch wood - just did), all OK. Replaced all the cooling system in end and some sensors - seemed to do the trick. Recon lots of HG sealant had clogged everything up inc rad, wiring to rad sensor replaced - all flushed through numerous times, now doesn't overheat or think its overheating.

Now to bodywork, its solid but was partially prepped for paint by PO, should I leave as is (rat look) or get an original colour respray, or a DIY job in keeping with track status.............?

Ian

Liquid steel HG sealant works fine but as all these things it's just a patch over a major fault

Yes - what else could it inadvertently seal? (eg Radiator in my car's case!!)

Yes, although I do know someone who put it in a Mitsubishi L200, and all's well 5 years later - but not really a fix for something with a refined or complex engine.

So decided to try 944 out on a 200 mile round trip yesterday (first proper run in car since all problems - cured?).

Mixture of roads, including Motorway, an hour in traffic on M32 and no overheating or running issues - I got cooked though as the heater valve wouldn't close properly, although I've since freed it off and I get cool air now!

Used a bit of oil I think, or maybe it was not full at start, so Ive decided anyway to change oil and filter again very soon - probably best after a major top end rebuild and little use in last couple of years.

Still :D
