Well, having 'cut my teeth' on several 944S projects, I was getting a bit of an itch to do another Porsche. I had always fancied a 924S, so when this one popped-up on eBay recently, I thought I would have to give it go. I realise that perhaps some fellow forum members may have seen it, and indeed may have bid on it - but I got it ....it is hopefully arriving on Saturday. Here are a few photos from the listing:





As you can see, it is in a bit of a poor state (to say the least!), but I think it really deserves a second chance. Once it is delivered the first thing will be fit a replacement tailgate, then the 'fun' begins .

I will try to document the entire process in the same way I did for my trusty old 944S.

What have I done.... Porsche insanity strikes again...

Now that's a project lol! I was watching this as I recently bought 2 924s and a 944s, but this looked a bit much for me lol!

Bloody hell, that's a lot of work!! Good luck with it and I look forward to reading your posts.

Plan is to keep it the same colour (Garnet Red, I think), and blitz the mechanicals. It will actually come with a replacement tailgate, so that's sorted. Already started the obligatory 'pile of new parts' that all Porsche restorers will know about. Got all new discs and pads, various seals, etc. Will wait to see what type of struts it has (should be insert type?), and then order some new front and rear shocks. Pretty much a 'blanket change' in a lot of areas... Will not even attempt to start until engine is overhauled. Head off, front of engine seals, pulleys, belts, etc. Been through this all before with the 944S, so learnt a lot. Not sure about the clutch, if it has been replaced at some time then that would good. However, I will pull the engine, as it is so much easier to do everything then. Interior is a bit sad too, got moss on the carpet!

But nice seats...(there is some damage, but I will live with that for a while)

Rear seats are trashed, as is the carpet. However, I have an almost complete set of black carpets to fit, along with a replacement rear seat and boot carpet from Pie Performance.
Loads more photo's will be forthcoming, that is for sure, as I will be taking so much apart - I want a good photo record to help me put it all back together again!

Wow...now that's a project....
Was there anything in the description about how long it had been standing there and how much rust is present? I ask as I know from experience how quick cars rust when left unattended on soil, even if for a fairly short time....
I wish you luck, though, these cars are worth saving, hope it's not too bad and you get it running in the very near future...

Blimey! and I thought I saved mine from the scrapper, its positively mint in comparison. See this makes me feel slightly less insane

I saw this on eBay and it's great to see it getting saved. Hopefully once the carpet is pulled out you won't find to many horrors underneath from the water sat in it. I found my 924 nice and easy to work on and even after a lack of tlc for a number of years it didn't take much to be respectable again. The really are quite hardy cars!!

Hi Briggy - Yep, I would agree with you!

Anyway, it arrived at lunchtime today, a very nice Kent-based car transporter chappie dropped it off. I gather the car was a bit reluctant to move, but it was finally winched onto the transporter. It rolled off with not to much ado and is now sitting on my drive. I have already taken the power-washer to it (mans favourite power tool ). The green slime in nearly gone. The sodden and rotten (smelly too) rear carpet and a whole heap of broken tailgate glass has been removed, the engine has been washed down too. It appears that a small furry rodent had made a home under the bonnet, so a few wires and hoses have been chewed , but nothing too serious. The driver sill appears to be very sound, but the passenger one not so. I think it had a scrape at some time, so the metal was bent a bit, that is all it takes for rust to get a hold. I kinda expected something in the sill area, so no real surprise. I gather that original 924 sills are still available - can anyone confirm?

Added bonus of a few spares in the car, new dist cap, speedo cable, fuel filter, all surprisingly OK. Also, the bonnet struts are practically new and perform well and the rear box is an almost new stainless one - result! . Dash is complete toast, so now on the lookout for a better one. Seats need a good clean, but the trick will be removing them as the runners are a bit rusty from the water in the carpet - I think this might be a bit of a task, watch this space! WD40 a-plenty tomorrow I think..

Lower wing section sections are almost rot-free on first inspection, and in general the car bodywork appears pretty flat and sound. - all in all, I am quite pleased. .

Really need to get the replacement tailgate on as soon as possible to button it back up against the weather. It came with the slightly larger 944 spoiler one, I hope it will look OK - it should do?

I like your vision here, and look forward to your updates. It is inspirational to us that are running rolling restos.

Google for brickwork vw as they do the sills that get well received in terms of quality and fit.

Mine had a 944 rear spoiler when I got it but with the narrow body it made it look like it had a fat but. Easy enough to change over though.

Nice project, you're a brave man! Worth saving though if the floor is intact (fingers crossed!).

Thanks for that Russ, good call...pretty good price too, so will be getting what's needed from them.

Did a bit more the other evening, managed to get the passenger seat out and the carpet on that side, man...that was a horrible job . Moss and stagnant water to deal with, but underneath the carpet and sound-proofing the floor is in exceptional shape. I was prepared to fight the seat as I guessed the runners and bolts would have been badly rusted in, but I was surprised - on the passenger side at least. Managed to get the front bolts out on the driver seat, but can't seem to get the seat far enough forward to uncover the rear bolts. Maybe something is stuck in the runner, will have a look Thursday evening.

Car has been drying out today, so really want to get the hatch fitted soon, before the weather turns rainy again....

Oh yes, a question - has anyone on this forum either removed the side moulding strips entirely, or replaced them with a 944 set. If so, any photos? Thanks.

The side mouldings should just be stuck on. When I got mine the passenger side rear quarter one was missing and it was just a case of cleaning up the remaining sticky 'stuff' that was left on the panel. I still cant decide if having them removed and a clean look or leaving them to breakup the lines of the car is best
