for a while now ive been having trouble getting into 1st and 2nd gear.
In order to engage either gear you have to really push the lever hard to the left and be very precise and punchy with it. all other gears engage completly fine. and the car has recently had a new clutch.
does anyone know weather this may be the gear linkage? (and if so is it an easy fix?) or any other sugestions?

anything would be much appreciated

My 944S2 gearshift was pretty awful very loose and imprecise so I changed the linkage from gear lever handle to gear selector. Apparently it is a common issue that the linkage wears and it becomes loose, simple to replace once you get the centre console out.

I bought mine from a shop on eBay but they are available at http://www.944online.com/cgi-bin/ASI_St ... y_20051571 this one comes with a replacement bush and fittings if you check FAQs it gives details of why and how to change it, the one I bought didn't come with a replacement bush but was about half the price so I re-used the original bush and washers as they looked ok anyway from here http://stores.ebay.com/Deutsche-Parts-USA
Seems to have worked a treat no more slack gear change lever wobbling around and more precise changes.

Thanks very much for those links, i had the gear shifter off the car at the weekend and, and removed the gear shift leaver which appears to be new(ish). i therefore think it must be the other part of the transaxel linkage that is worn, any idea how to access this? or is this an area that can be reached via the centre console? and if so how do you remove enough of the centre console? any adivse again would be great!

I'd be interested to know the results of this, i have a similar problem although its slightly intermittant. Some times its hard to get into 1st and second as you describe bnut somtimes its silky smooth. Seems like a wear issue to me. I was considering a short shift kit which i thought might solve the issue and give the benefits of the shorter shift too.

Jon Mitchell makes a bush to replace the factory one in a harder material (bronze vs. poly or steel vs. bronze - I forget which).

I seem to be making slow progress with this!, but will keep you uodated as i go.
As i previously said i had the shifter off and it looked to fairly new, but have now since found that it could be the end of the long gear linkage that meets it that is worn??
ive slid around as best i could under the car to try and locate the rear of the linkage, but didnt have much of a view!,
I have also spoken to garage about the work who said it could cost up yo £340 in labour plus parts. so think its something i will continue to try and solve myself. .. watch this space!
